Restaurant owner provides free meals

A Butler business owner is again giving back to the community this holiday season.

David Cook, who along with wife, Lisa Cook, own When Pigs Fly barbecue restaurant on South Chestnut Street, is offering traditional Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Eve meals at no charge for the needy.

The holiday food vouchers for the homeless are now available at the restaurant and can be picked up during regular business hours from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

This is the 10th year for the charitable program that Cook began just one year after he opened his BBQ joint. It began with an emphasis to aid homeless veterans.

“I'm a vet,” he said. “This is a veteran business and I'm trying to give back to the vets.”

But he said the food vouchers are for all those who find themselves without a home.

“It will be the traditional holiday meal,” Cook said of the offering. “Turkey, ham, mashed potatoes and the like.”

His BBQ — pulled pork, ribs and brisket — are not on the menu. Unless, Cook admitted, the turkey and ham runs out.

The vouchers can be redeemed and meals picked up on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Eve from 2 to 8 p.m.
