Social media leads to ATV thief's arrest

PARKER TWP — A trail camera and social media led to the arrest Tuesday of a suspected all-terrain vehicle thief, authorities said.

Tyler J. Snyder, 25, of Washington Township is accused of taking the 2011 Kawasaki ATV — valued at $5,000 — in August from a wooded area off Bowser Road in Parker Township.

The victim told state police that the vehicle was stolen Aug. 18 or 19. He also advised police that his trail cameras in the woods captured photographs of the suspect, according to court documents.

The property, which encompasses more than 200 acres, is posted with “No Trespassing” signs.

The owner downloaded the photos and posted them on Facebook in hopes that someone would recognize the thief and identify him.

“Approximately 24 hours after the posting,” according to court documents, “Snyder contacted (the victim) via text messages and advised he did something stupid and wanted to return his ATV.”

The defendant identified himself in the texts and also “detailed the theft after a night of drinking,” the documents said. The victim, in turn, notified police.

District Judge Lewis Stoughton on Tuesday arraigned Snyder on a felony charge of theft and misdemeanor charges of unauthorized use of a vehicle and trespass.

He is free on his own recognizance. A preliminary hearing is set Nov. 27 at Stoughton's office in Chicora.
