Icy roads slow morning traffic in Butler

Butler County commuters this morning found roads not so friendly, thanks to rain and freezing temperatures.

Some roads were described as “sheets of ice” and at least three vehicle crashes resulted in injuries, authorities said.

Icy conditions got so bad in Butler not long after 7 a.m. that city police had to close the General Richard Butler Bridge.

Southbound traffic came to a standstill from Wayne Street to the light at Pittsburgh Road as some motorists were unable to gain traction on the slippery pavement, which created a logjam of cars and trucks.

Police said PennDOT was called to back up heavy truck traffic in order for crews to treat the road with salt.

A rollover wreck was reported at 6:44 a.m. on Route 422 near the Lyndora exit.

Less than 10 minutes later, a multi-vehicle crash on Route 68 in Forward Township closed a portion of the road. One person was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with unknown injuries.

At 7:27 a.m., another person was hurt in a one-vehicle crash on Route 38 in Center Township. The injured motorist was taken by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital.

Another multi-vehicle wreck was reported about 9:15 a.m. in Adams Township, leaving one person with apparent minor injuries on Plains Church Road.
