SV, Knoch send teams to state semi's

With 28 minutes remaining in the second half of a scoreless tie, Jackson Wotus received a feed from Ben Francis and found the back of the net to give the Seneca Valley boys soccer team a 1-0 lead over Abington Saturday afternoon in Chambersburg.

The Raiders’ defense did the rest, holding that 1-0 lead and securing a trip to the PIAA 4A semifinals.

“It’s huge,” said Seneca Valley coach George Williams. “Our team has just continued to play better and better together. We started out at the beginning of the season not knowing what to expect in a really strong section we have.”

And now Seneca Valley (19-2-1) is one win away from playing for a state title.

Will Gallagher had seven saves in net for the Raiders. Several of them were from point-blank range late as Abington attempted a late push.

Abington’s attack was something new for Seneca Valley, Williams said.

“They had a different style; they were very direct,” Williams said. “They’d hit it forward and try to overwhelm you with numbers. It was like a blitz in football. That’s what it felt like.”

But Seneca Valley held the line and will play Radnor in the semifinals Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. back at Chambersburg.

“I’m proud of this group,” Williams said.

Volleyball

Skylar Burkett made sure Knoch stayed undefeated.

The junior had 12 kills and three aces as the Knights moved to 24-0 this season and won their 48th consecutive match with a 25-12, 25-22, 25-14 sweep of Dover in the PIAA 3A quarterfinals.

Kennedy Christy added six kills and Kerrie Fitzpatrick had 10 service points and 18 assists for the defending 3A champions.

The Knights will play District 10 champion Warren at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Clarion High School.

Girls Soccer

Penalty kicks have been good and bad to Seneca Valley.

They were bad Saturday.

After winning on penalty kicks Tuesday to advance to the PIAA 4A quarterfinals, the Raiders died by them Saturday against Souderton, falling 4-3 on PKs and 2-1 in the match.

Norah Seibel scored on a header off a throw-in by Breana Valentovish to give the Raiders the 1-0 lead with a little more than eight minutes remaining in the first half.

But Souderton responded with a goal of its own with 16 minutes left in regulation.

It stayed that way until penalty kicks decided it.

Seneca Valley finished the season 17-3.

Blue Mountain 1, Mars 0 — The run is over for the Planets.

Mars couldn’t crack the scoreboard against District 11 champion Blue Mountain in the PIAA 3A quarterfinals at Bald Eagle High School.

Mars finished 19-2 with both losses coming by a 1-0 score.
