Time to dish out honors

With the 2018 high school football season winding down, it’s only fitting to recognize some stellar moments and outstanding individuals.

Here are my selective highlights for Friday nights this year:

Wildest Play — The Moniteau punter trying to kick a loose football out of the end zone while being run into by Karns City players. The penalty on the Gremlins helped the Warriors preseve a 20-14 victory that vaulted them toward a playoff season.

Most Productive Player — Garrett Reinke, Mars running back. His school will receive the Butler Eagle Scoring Trophy to prove it.

Most Improved Player — Kyler Callihan, Butler quarterback. A running back at the start of the season, injuries to teammates wound up putting him behind center. He ran for 100 yards and threw for 100 in his final game.

Best Coaching Performance — Back we go to Moniteau. Bob Rottman took a 28-player roster and guided it into the playoffs. The Warriors are still playing this weekend.

Best Defense — Seneca Valley, Any team that goes through an entire season allowing fewer than 10 points per game gets my vote.

MVP — Plenty of possibilities here, but my pick is Freeport quarterback Austin Romanchak. He touched the ball on every play and was a scoring threat on every play.

Best Combo Deal — Knoch running back Matt Goodlin and quarterback Chase Mullen. Their combined productivity was off the charts.

Perfect Timing Award — Slippery Rock quarterback Vito Pilosi. As his game took off, so did the Rockets.

Most Versatile — North Catholic quarterback Zack Rocco. He can hurt you with his arm or his feet — and his college future might be on defense.
