Owori, Hicks have big days

Both place 6th at PIAA cross country meet

HERSHEY — Seneca Valley's Sam Owori and North Catholic's Alaina Hicks both had big days at the PIAA Cross Country Championships Saturday.

Owori, a senior, ran a time of 16 minutes, 39 seconds to place sixth in the Class AAA boys race as the Raiders finished fourth as a team.

North Allegheny won the team title.

Meanwhile Hicks, only a freshman, turned in an effort of 20:52 in the Class A girls race to also place sixth.

The North Catholic girls were 11th as a team. Marion Center won the girls title.

Seneca Valley had four runners in the top 30.

Seth Ketler was eighth with a time of 16:46. Connor Volk-Klos was 19th at 16:58 and Noah Petersen was 30th at 17:16.

Mars also got a historic showing by junior Zachary Leachman, who placed 24th with a time of 16:56.

Leachman became the first individual medalist in the history of Mars cross country.

Butler's Skylar Vavro also turned in a strong showing, finishing 31st at 17:00.

Knoch's Sammy Jo Barnes was 30th in the Class AA girls race with a mark of 20:56 and Slippery Rock's Harley Pflugh was 100th at 22:00.

Seneca Valley's Bailey Royhab was 39th in the Class AAA girls race, finishing in 20:26.

Mars' McKenna Bowes was 46th at 20:29.

Tennis

After winning 6-2, 6-1 on Friday to reach the semifinals of the PIAA Class AA Girls Singles Tennis Championship, Knoch's Laura Greb dropped her final two matches to place fourth.

Her teammate, Brooke Bauer, lost in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

In doubles action, former Knoch player Elle Santora and her Shady Side Academy partner, Aya Youssef cruised into the semifinals but lost their final two matches to also place fourth in Class AAA.

The Mars tandem of Amelia Henry and Emily Ivory also lost in the quarterfinals.
