7 county football teams open playoff seasons this weekend

Seven Butler County football teams will begin playoff action this weekend.

Seneca Valley, Mars, Freeport and North Catholic are in the WPIAL playoffs. Mars and North Catholic have home games.

Moniteau and Union/A-C Valley are on the road in District 9 action. Slippery Rock plays Saturday night in the District 10 playoffs.

Here is a look at the matchups:

Seneca Valley (7-3)

vs. Central Catholic (7-3)

7:30 p.m., Friday

at Fox Chapel

Seneca Valley closed the regular season last week with a 21-13 win at Norwin while Central dropped a 17-7 decision to Mt. Lebanon.

This playoff meeting will be a rematch of a Quad County Conference game played Aug. 31 and won by the Vikings, 20-14. SV starting QB Gabe Lawson missed that contest with an injury and backup Caden Smithco passed for 128 yards and two TDs. The Raiders rushed for 56 yards in that game, with RB Matt Stanger the only SV player to gain positive yardage with 58 yards. Stanger missed last week's game due to injury and senior Jake Mineweaser gained 159 yards and scored twice.

“Matt practiced (on Tuesday),” said SV coach Ron Butschle. “If he's 100 percent, he will split carries with Jake on Friday.”

Lawson has thrown for 1,001 yards with 11 TDs and 4 INTs this season.

Central QB Dom Pieto lost his starting job to Gus Sunseri two weeks ago. In last week's loss, Sunseri passed for just 27 yards, but gained 120 on the ground. Sophomore RB Eddy Tillman leads the Vikings' ground attack with 801 yards.

Woodland Hills (4-6)

at Mars (9-1)

7:30 p.m., Friday

Woodland Hills is coming off a 28-14 victory over Chartiers Valley. Mars defeated Hampton, 30-6.

The Wolverines lost their first four games this season, but have won three of their last four. QB Gavin Judson has thrown for 736 yards this season with 7 TDs and 9 INTs. The team's offense is led by its rushing attack, namely William Clark (719 yards) and Anthony Merideth (704).

Mars brings a powerful running game into the playoffs. Senior FB Garrett Reinke has rushed for 1,747 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2018. QB Tyler Kowalkowski has amassed 1,059 passing yards with 11 TDs and 8 INTs. WR Thomas Sheehy paces the aerial game with 13 receptions for 295 yards and 4 TDs. In his first year of varsity football, senior WR Andrew Recchia has caught 9 passes for 256 yards and 5 TDs.

The Planets have allowed more than 14 points in a game just twice this season.

Freeport (5-4)

vs. Aliquippa (9-1)

7:30 p.m., Friday

at Ambridge

Both teams are coming off losses. The Yellowjackets dropped a 26-7 decision at Knoch while the Quips fell 14-8 to Central Valley.

Freeport has never defeated Aliquippa. Its 0-6 record in the series includes regular season losses of 52-0 and 21-3 the past two years, along with a 36-14 loss in the 2015 WPIAL semifinals.

QB Austin Romanchak remains the heart of the Yellowjacket offense. He has amassed 2,069 all-purpose yards in 2018 — 963 rushing, 610 in kick/punt returns, 494 passing. He has rushed for 13 TDs and has seven 100-yard games on the ground.

RB Conor Selinger has 603 yards and 10 TDs rushing. Evan McCrea is Freeport's top receiver with 12 catches for 181 yards. Four Freeport defenders — Isiah Bauman, Selinger, Patrick Keeley and Ricky Hunter — have more than 50 tackles on the year. The Yellowjackets have 24 QB sacks, Garrett Schaffhauser leading the way with five.

Aliquippa QB Eli Kosanovich is sixth in the WPIAL with 2,156 yards passing. He's thrown for 30 TDs and only two interceptions. His favorite target, WR Will Gipson, has 35 catches for 1,118 yards and 14 TDs. He is currently a Ball State recruit, but is now being looked at by Power Five conference schools.

Quips RB Avante McKenzie has rushed for 1,154 yards and 21 TDs, averaging 9.3 yards per carry. WR-CB MJ Devonshire, a Division I recruit, has 18 catches for 400 yards and has scored 18 TDs. He is considered one of the top three cornerbacks in the state. WR Deoveon Crute has 21 catches for 310 yards and is a Duquesne recruit.

Quaker Valley (5-4)

vs. North Catholic (9-1)

7:30 p.m., Friday

Stone Field, North Park

Last Week, Quaker Valley beat South Park, 34-14. North Catholic crushed Deer Lakes, 64-3.

The Quakers won a WPIAL and PIAA title last season, but graduated a combined 12 starters on offense and defense. Quaker Valley's five wins this season have come against opponents with a combined record of 17-32. Quaker QB Ethan Moore has 1,411 passing yards, 10 TDs and 7 INTs this season while completing half of his attempts. He also is the team's leading rusher with 537 yards and 11 TDs.

Since suffering a 27-0 defeat to Derry Sept. 21, the Trojans have won five straight games while outscoring their opponents 251-10. North Catholic has allowed just 77 points all season, second in WPIAL Class 3A to only top-seeded Aliquippa's 47.

North Catholic QB Zack Rocco has turned in a superb junior season, passing for 1,555 yards with 22 TDs and just 2 INTs. He has added 407 rushing yards, which is second on the team behind Cameron Branch's total of 638. WR Tyree Brown paces the Trojans with 24 catches for 591 yards and has scored 8 TDs.

Union/A-C Valley (4-6)

at Smethport (9-0)

7 p.m., Friday

The Falcon Knights finished the regular season with a 21-7 loss at Ridgway. Smethport edged Coudersport, 21-20.

Union/A-C Valley has totaled 21 quarterback sacks this season. Brady Cullen and Nolan Cumberland have both intercepted three passes. Cumberland also leads the team's rushers with 457 yards and 5 TDs. QB Luke Bowser has 663 yards, 7 TDs and 9 INTs. His top target is WR Tanner Merwin (13-246-3).

Union/A-C Valley became a combined program in 2016. This is the first year the Falcon Knights have qualified for the postseason.

Smethport, the top-ranked team in the district, is paced by senior RB Blake Kinner, who has rushed for 910 yards and scored 11 TDs. QB Grant Ognen has produced 797 yards in the passing game with 10 TDs and 3 INTs. The Hubbers finished 3-6 last year and missed the playoffs.

Moniteau (6-4) at Clarion (6-4)

7 p.m., Friday

These two teams met all the way back in Week 1 with Moniteau falling 34-14 in a game that was much closer than that final score.

Eight weeks later, the Warriors and Bobcats meet again in the first round of the District 9 2A playoffs with each team heading in decidedly different directions.

Moniteau has won three in a row in impressive fashion, capping the regular season with a 36-12 triumph at home over Keystone. Meanwhile, Clarion has dropped four straight, including a 62-28 drubbing at the hands of rival Clarion-Limestone last week.

“Any team is going to be different eight weeks later,” said Moniteau coach Bob Rottman. “What we were doing then was kind of new and we were still trying to figure out who was running it and who was blocking it.”

Moniteau has certainly figured that out. Cody Wise is running it and a big and physical line is blocking it.

Wise leads Moniteau with 1,189 yards rushing – 606 of that coming in the last three weeks.

Clarion hasn't changed its identity much since the first meeting. The Bobcats still like to run the ball with a smattering of passes, mainly to Sam Minich, who leads the Bobcats with 46 receptions.

“They have the same personnel and a lot of the same formations,” Rottman said. “I'm pretty sure coach (Larry) Wiser isn't going to change much. Our kids are excited in general just to be in the position to play a playoff game. I think we're going to come out and put our best foot forward.”

Slippery Rock (6-3) vs. Harbor Creek (8-2)

7 p.m., Saturday

at Erie Veterans Stadium

Slippery Rock had a week off ahead of its District 10 3A first-round playoff game against Harbor Creek.

Rockets' coach Larry Wendereusz said he planned to use that extra week to iron out some of the kinks that have developed over the course of the season, as well as get a few players healthier.

Slippery Rock got a dry run of what to expect when it plays the Huskies when it took on Oil City two weeks ago. The Oilers run a similar offense to Harbor Creek, which likes to pound the run game first and throw off of that.

Harbor Creek uses a slew of running backs, led by Tyler East.

East rushed for 156 yards and a touchdown last week in a 46-0 win over Cambridge Springs.

The Huskies defense has logged three shutouts this season.

Slippery Rock is led by junior quarterback Vito Pilosi. The double-threat has thrown for 949 yards and 10 touchdowns and has also rushed for 699 yards and 10 more scores.

The last two seasons the Rockets have opened the district playoffs with a win. In 2016 they shocked Mercyhurst Prep, 28-0, and last year they toppled Harbor Creek, 38-14.
