Pairs do damage to Butler in loss

Butler quarterback Kyler Callihan (2) is hoisted up by offensive lineman Samuel Enslen after Callihan scored on a 3-yard run in the second quarter of the Golden Tornado's 43-13 loss to Canon-McMillan Friday night. Callihan rushed for 137 yards and passed for another 111 in the defeat that ended Butler's season at 0-10.

BUTLER TWP — Two pair were too much for Butler Friday night.

A pair of Canon-McMillan offensive weapons and a pair of special teams blunders combined to hand the Golden Tornado a season-ending 43-13 Quad County Conference football loss on Senior Night at Art Bernardi Stadium.

“We felt that way, too,” Butler coach Eric Christy responded when told it should have been a one-score game at halftime.

Instead, the Big Macs (4-5, 3-5) had a 34-13 advantage on their way to clinching a WPIAL Class 6A playoff spot.

Butler (0-10, 0-8) trailed 14-6 late in the first quarter when it fumbled a kickoff away inside its own 5-yard-line. The Big Macs pounced on the ball at the 2. Josh O'Hare scored on a 2-yard run on the next play to give Canon-Mac a 20-6 advantage.

The score was 27-13 late in the first half with the Tornado just trying to kill the clock. On fourth-and-3 from its 27, Butler mishandled a punt snap and Kyler Callihan was dropped at his 12-yard line.

Quarterback Jon Quinque scored on a 12-yard scramble with 16 seconds left in the half, giving Canon-Mac a 34-13 advantage.

“We came up here last year, didn't play well on special teams and lost,” Big Macs coach Mike Evans said. “It was raining tonight, that can be an equalizer, and it was their Senior Night.

“This is the last time a lot of their kids will be playing football ... You don't know what's going to happen. These last games of the season can be weird.”

Butler mishandled a number of snaps, many of which were low.

“Yeah, it was wet out there, but they (Big Macs) weren't having any trouble with their snaps,” Christy said. “We shouldn't have been having trouble, either.”

The Tornado had plenty of trouble with O'Hare and Drew Engle.

Running back O'Hare had 15 carries for 195 yards and a touchdown. Engle — who lines up in numerous positions — had eight carries for 71 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught a 4-yard TD pass.

“Those are two special offensive players we have,” Evans said. “They can do a lot of things.

“On Drew's last touchdown, Josh threw a great block for him. These kids love each other. They've been playing football together since they were six years old.”

Butler was not without its moments. Senior quarterback Callihan ran for 137 yards and a touchdown, threw for 111 and a score. Chris Mertz, another senior, caught an 18-yard touchdown pass.

Senior Darin Skidmore had a 24-yard run. Senior receiver Mitchell Wong caught a 26-yard pass to keep an eventual Tornado scoring drive going.

Senior lineman Godfrey Panzarello had a pair of quarterback sacks.

“For our seniors, this is all about life lessons,” Christy said. “Things aren't always gonna go your way. This is a game. It's not real life.

“Now those guys are entering real life and they've learned from these experiences.”

Zach Slomers intercepted a pass for the Tornado. He is among a number of players returning next season.

“We need to learn from this year, work hard in the off-season,” Christy said. “We don't want to go through another season like this again.”
