Moniteau eyes successful home finale

CHERRY TWP — The Moniteau football team will have to be ready for anything Friday night against Keystone.

That's because the Panthers' offense throws everything it can at opposing defenses.

There's multiple and then there's Keystone.

“They'll go five-wide on one series and then on the next come out in a power-I,” said Moniteau coach Bob Rottman. “They change formations a lot. They run multiple offenses and that will keep our defense on our toes.”

But Rottman, who has his 5-4 Warriors prepping for the playoffs, isn't overly concerned about Keystone's eclectic looks.

“Everything they're running we've seen at one point from other teams this season,” Rottman said. “So, they've seen it all before. It's just a matter of lining up based on what they are showing.”

Keystone (3-6) has had mild success with the multiple attack.

Junior quarterback Isaak Jones has thrown for 1,289 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. But he's also thrown 11 interceptions.

The running game has also failed to gain much traction.

As a team, the Panthers are averaging a mere four yards per carry. Sophomore Nick Weaver leads the ground game with 332 yards on 80 carries.

There's no such offensive trouble in Moniteau.

The Warriors have rushed for 803 yards over the last two weeks, including 432 yards in a 32-21 win over Punxsutawney Friday.

Senior running back Cody Wise gained 233 yards on his own against the Chucks and went over 1,000 yards for the season.

Wise has 1,018 yards on 136 carries.

Moniteau won't be holding anything back, either, even with the playoffs looming.

“I look for us to play this game like any other game on our schedule,” Rottman said. “This is probably our last game at home for these seniors — I don't see a scenario where we have a home game. That's how we're looking at it. We're looking at this as the start of the playoffs.”

After the win against St,. Marys, Rottman set the goal of five straight wins, which would give the Warriors a District 9 championship.

One down. Four to go.

“I truly believe that our kids can win four more games in a row,” Rottman said. “Every team ahead of us — Ridgway, Brookville, Clarion — we didn't come out of those games feeling like we couldn't compete against them. We beat ourselves in those games.”

North Catholic (8-1, 6-1) at Deer Lakes (3-5, 3-4)

TE/LB Nikhai Hill-Green returned to the lineup last week following an injury. ... The Trojans need a win to strengthen their chances of earning a top-four seed in the upcoming WPIAL Class 3A playoffs, which would give them a home game the first week of the postseason.

Karns City (3-6) at Titusville (2-7)

Titusville QB Boaz Larocque has thrown for 352 yards, 3 TDs and six interceptions. He has not been the starter all year. RB Paul Harvey has rushed for 882 yards and 10 TDs. Charlie Nicholson leads the team defensively with 51 tackles, including 13 tackles for loss. Titusville has allowed 55 or more points in three games this season.

Union/A-C Valley (4-5) at Ridgway (8-1)

7 p.m., Friday

The Falcon Knights fell to Redbank Valley last Friday, 33-7. Ridgway suffered its first loss of the season, 28-11, to Brookville.

Both teams are headed to the playoffs, Union/A-C Valley in Class A and the Elkers in Class AA.

Junior LB Colby Best paces U/ACV with 76 tackles.

Ridgway, involved in a co-op with Johnsonburg, is the District 9 Large Division champion. ... Gabe Watts, Evan Furlong, Cole Secco and Jake Wickett have each rushed for at least 330 yards this season for the Elkers. Watts, a QB, leads the ground attack with 412 yards.
