2 girls now facing charges in threats

Second arrest made Monday in Mars incident

ADAMS TWP — Two 16-year-old girls face felony charges for their alleged roles in a bomb threat that led to the cancellation of classes in the Mars School District last week.

According to a release from the Adams Township Police Department, a second 16-year-old female was arrested Monday after the first female suspect was arrested Friday.

School officials canceled Friday classes on Thursday night, after rumors of potential violent acts circulated. Officials said the rumor was of a bomb threat and shooting alleged to occur at the high school.

The cancellation came after Mars High School was evacuated Oct. 16 and 17 following bomb threats. In those incidents notes were allegedly found in a hallway, officials said.

Both girls are charged with terroristic threats causing the evacuation of a building, criminal conspiracy to commit terroristic threats and threatening to place or set weapons of mass destruction. All three charges are third-degree felonies.

According to the release, both juveniles were transferred to Butler County Juvenile Probation. The release also indicates the charges stem from the Oct. 17 incident. Additional details were unavailable Monday.

Classes were held in the school district Monday, and events took place at the Mars Athletic Complex throughout the weekend. Superintendent Wesley Shipley said in addition to the criminal charges, the district will enforce policies for discipline, “to the fullest extent.”

District policy for students making such threats indicates they could face an expulsion hearing. If a student is expelled for making threats, he or she would be required to provide, “competent and credible evidence” that they do not pose a risk to others before being readmitted. They also would be subject to random searches if a return is permitted, the policy states. The district also has the ability to seek restitution for costs incurred for evacuation of property, including transportation, maintenance and administrative costs, the policy states.

Shipley praised local police for their action in keeping the schools safe.
