Memorial for PennDOT workers killed on the job comes to Butler County

A traveling memorial for PennDOT workers who have been killed on the job is on display in Butler until Oct. 22.

A traveling memorial to road workers killed on the job is in Butler right now, and one Butler County man is among those honored.

Since 1967, 89 Pennsylvania Department of Transportation workers died as a result of worksite accidents. To memorialize those 89, and hopefully deter names from being added to the list, a display of small stands holding orange vests and hard hats is set up in front of PennDOT’s Butler office on New Castle Road through Monday.

Mark “Sparky” Mares, a PennDOT highway foreman, installs the memorial every time it comes to town. He sets one of the stands forward from the bunch — the stand belonging to Ron Porter, the only Butler County resident on the list.

“He was a real good guy,” Mares said. “Always had a smile on his face.”

Working on a road project can be more dangerous than drivers tend to realize, Mares said.

“Workers can’t really pay attention to where people are driving, because you have to concentrate on keeping the work site safe, not the road,” Mares said. “If a vehicle enters the worksite, you have half a second to respond to it.”

Mike Mattis, PennDOT’s Butler County maintenance manager, said he hopes people take time to think about the safety when they see the memorial.

“We don’t want to see anybody added to this memorial,” he said.

The department is working with Butler’s state police barracks to increase patrols around PennDOT worksites in something called Operation Yellow Jackets.

PennDOT issues a simple safety tips for driving around roadwork: Use your headlights. Watch your speed. Take caution not to tailgate in case of sudden stops. Keep your eyes open for posted signs with special instructions. Driving instructions may change as a project progresses.
