Garbage truck fire closes Unionville Road

CRANBERRY TWP — A fire that appeared to start in a garbage truck sent smoke billowing into the air and closed Unionville Road in the township Thursday.

The fire was reported just after 10 a.m. Thursday. Within minutes, Cranberry police and fire were on scene to battle the fire.

The contents of the garbage truck were fully engulfed and dumped onto the road. Firefighters extinguished the flames within about 15 minutes of the initial call, though they then used long sticks to move the pile around and address lingering hot spots. A second fire truck was brought on scene to provide further assistance.

No information was available at the scene, though cleanup of the scene looked like it could take a while. In addition to Unionville Road being closed at both ends, the intersection of Unionville and Ogle View was is also temporarily closed.
