'Threat of violence' closes Mars schools Friday

The Mars School District will be closed Friday as the district and the Adams Township Police Department investigate “rumors of possible violence,” according to a letter to parents Thursday night from Superintendent Wesley W. Shipley.

“While Adams Township Police Department has yet to substantiate these rumors and is continuing its investigation, the district is closing its schools on Friday, Oct. 19, out of an abundance of caution,” Shipley wrote.

In addition, all school district-sponsored, on-campus activities have also been canceled on Friday; the varsity football game at Kiski Area will be played.

“The district strives to remain proactive in the protection of our students, faculty and staff members,” Shipley wrote. “We thank you for your patience and cooperation as the district continues to investigate this matter.”

The news release concluded with a request for anyone with information about the rumors to call the Adams Township Police Department.
