Butler, Hempfield hungry for win

Both teams seek 1st Quad County football victory against each other Friday night

BUTLER TWP — Something's gotta give.

The two winless football teams in Quad County Conference play — Butler and Hempfield — clash at 7 p.m. Friday at Hempfield High School.

The Golden Tornado (0-8, 0-6) have lost via the mercy rule in every game this season. The Spartans (1-7, 0-7) have dropped 16 straight games against Class 6A opponents.

“I see their situation being similar to ours,” Hempfield coach Rich Bowen said of Butler. “We expect a battle this Friday.

“These are two hungry football teams who want to win. This should be a great game.”

It will be a game featuring contrasting offenses. Hempfield quarterback Blake Remaley has thrown for more than 1,000 yards while Butler quarterback Kyler Callihan has rushed for more than 500.

While both teams have definite identities, they are also making progress in other ways to move the ball.

“Kyler's throwing motion has really improved the past couple of weeks,” Butler coach Eric Christy said. “I no longer consider him a running back playing quarterback. We've been working on getting him to throw more over the top than three-quarters and the ball isn't sailing on him as much.”

While Matt Rairigh, the Tornado quarterback to begin the year, is returning from a knee injuiry, Callihan will still start behind center. Promising sophomore running back Byron Manchester is also coming back after missing a few weeks with a concussion.

“We're coming up with other ways to get Matt on the field where he can help us,” Christy said. “Byron is just getting back into it. He'll play Friday, but we don't want to throw too much at him too fast.”

Remaley is a junior who threw for 500 yards in Hempfield's final two games last season. Running backs Mario Perkins and Nathan Roby have both rushed for more than 300 yards on the year.

“Our ground game has picked up the last couple of weeks,” Bowen said. “Roby ran for 120 yards against North Allegheny last week and Perkins rushed for 70. They're both doing a nice job.

“I'm in my 27th year of coaching and I'm not going to panic. This team is going to win games down the road. When it happens, it happens.

“We've had some close games. We lost 20-14 to Canon-McMillan in a game we should have won. We lost a close one to Norwin and only lost 28-13 to Central Catholic. We have plenty of positives to draw from,” he added.

Perkins and Roby both have 15 catches out of the backfield for the Spartans. Zach Cieslo is the team's top receiver with 18 catches for 250 yards.

Anthony Daviduk has returned to Butler's lineup at cornerback and could play a factor Friday. Christy lauded the play of J.R. Herold and Andrew Kline defensively as well.

“We've had some individuals doing good things,” Christy said. “We just need to do more good things as a total unit.

“Our final scores all look the same, but our coaches and kids know we're playing better. We're putting drives together now, chewing up clock. We just have to finish. If we finish off drives Friday, we've got a shot.”

Butler leads the series between the teams, 7-3. Hempfield won the last meeting, 42-7, in 2013. The Tornado claimed a 23-10 win at Hempfield in 2012.
