Definite Penguins flavor to 6.6k, family run

As they say at PPG Paints Arena, “It’s a Great Day for Hockey!” To paraphrase the Pittsburgh Penguins’ late beloved coach Badger Bob Johnson, it’s also a great day for running at the home of the Pens.

This Sunday at 8 a.m. marks the sixth running of Pittsburgh Penguins 6.6k Run and 3.3k Family Fun Walk. The event supports the charitable work of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Mario Lemieux Foundation.

More than 4,000 runners and walkers are expected for the competitive 6.6k (4.1 miles) and more for the untimed 3.3k walk, which both start at 8 a.m. in front of PPG Arena. The course has been changed from the original to accommodate the large number of participants.

Jinny Hertweck of Butler has run two Lemieux races and says the new start and staging area is a big improvement.

“The first time, it was very crowded and disorganized at the start. Last year was much better,” she said. “The walkers all started in the back and runners self-seeded by pace.”

For safety, kids in strollers are welcome in both events, but must start in the back of the 6.6k. Walkers are also permitted in the 6.6k distance, but must maintain a 20-minute mile pace since roads will reopen. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome only in the 3.3k event.

Both runners and walkers begin on wide and straight Fifth Avenue and cross the Monongahela River to Pittsburgh’s Southside. Walkers then turn around and head back across the bridge.

Runners continue along Carson Street on part of the Pittsburgh Marathon/Half Marathon course, then cross the river again after two miles. From there, it’s an out-and-back level mile and a trip through the Armstrong Tunnel before the uphill finish in front of Mario Lemieux’s statue on Centre Avenue.

Jinny says the best part of the race was that Mario Lemieux personally high-fived everyone crossing the finish line. “Mario actually being there is a big deal,” she says.

Mario and the Penguins’ presence is evident throughout the race. All participants receive a Penguin t-shirt and medal. While the top three male and female finishers earn cash, top three winners in age groups from 9 and under through 80+ earn Penguins hockey pucks. There’s also a post-race expo with a raffle for prizes, including Pens memorabilia signed by Sidney Crosby, Patric Hornqvist, Mario Lemieux and more.

It’s too late to sign up online for the Pittsburgh Penguins 6.6k Run and Family Fun Walk, but you may register at PPG Paints Arena Verizon Gate from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday or on raceday at PPG Paints Arena inside the Highmark Gate beginning at 6:30 a.m. Parking is free in the lots across the street, but allow plenty of time since traffic may be congested.
