U/ACV ekes out grid win

Falcon Knights down Keystone; Butler volleyball victorious

Luke Bowser connected with Tanner Merwin on a 20-yard touchdown strike to give Union/A-C Valley's football team a lead early in the second quarter before the defense shut out host Keystone in the second half of a 12-8 victory Thursday night.

The Panthers (3-4, 0-4) had taken an 8-0 lead midway through the opening period thanks to Isaak Jones' six-yard run followed by a successful two-point conversion attempt.

The Falcon Knights got on the board with Caden Rainey's three-yard scoring run with 10:42 left in the first half to cut their deficit to 8-6.

The win was the first District 9 Small School-South victory of the season for Union/A-C Valley (3-4, 1-3).

Boys Soccer

Karns City remained perfect this season with a 4-0 shutout of Grove City.

Dakota King had two goals and Nate Rondinelli and Owen Collwell both scored once.

Rondinelli and Brayden Christie recorded assists.

Jake Weckerly earned his eighth shutout of the season with six saves for KC (14-0).

Knoch 2, Kiski Area 0 — Jeremiah Smith scored both goals for the Knights (5-7-2, 4-6-1).

Girls Soccer

Slippery Rock's back line of Emily Sarver, Tessa McHattie, Ashley Shea and Hillary Burtner starred in a 5-0 win at Conneaut (Ohio).

The Rocket defense allowed just two shots on goalie Julia Hart.

All five goals were scored in the second half. Emily Sarver and Kayla Daugherty both scored twice, with Daugherty adding an assist.

Ellie Reiser also scored for the Rockets (10-1, 5-0).

Boys Golf

Beau Rusnak's 37 paced all golfers as Knoch upended Butler, 213-218, at Butler Country Club.

The Golden Tornado were led by Brayden Setnar's 39.

Butler (218): Brayden Setnar 39, Chris Huff 40, Colin Patterson 43, Jake Cuny 47, Lucas Slear 49

Seneca Valley held its annual 18-hole invitational at Cranberry Highlands, with Fox Chapel shooting a 367 to win the event.

The Raiders were just one stroke behind at 368. Sewickley Academy and Central Catholic rounded out the field with a 383 and 390, respectively.

WPIAL champion Jimmy Meyers of Central had the best individual score at five-under-par 65. SV's Mark McNulty and Fox Chapel's Scott Bitar both carded a 69.

The Raiders' other scoring golfers included Jacob Marquardt (73), Jimmy Stoltenberg (74), Ryan Bartos (76) and Zach Brown (76).

Girls Volleyball

Sophia Lucas had seven kills and 10 digs and teammate Sophia Sacriponte added six kills and five digs in Butler's sweep of visiting North Hills.

The Golden Tornado (7-4, 5-4) won by scores of 25-13, 27-25 and 25-18.

Knoch 3, Central Valley 1 — Hannah Rowe had 18 kills and Kerrie Fitzpatrick pitched in 34 assists as the Knights won 18-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-14.

The Knights improved to 12-0 overall and 10-0 in the section.

Clarion 3, Moniteau 0 — The Warriors proved no match for the Bobcats, who won by scores of 25-1, 25-11 and 25-15.

Freeport 3, Valley 0 — The Yellowjackets (9-1, 8-0) cruised to this win, with Isabella Russo tallying 11 kills and four blocks.

Lauren Lampus served up 13 points, including four aces, and added seven kills.

Erica Lampus had 17 points and 10 digs. Sisters Maddie and Samantha Clark combined for 28 assists and 13 service points.

Freeport won the match by scores of 25-5, 25-6 and 25-3.
