Mars tennis duo advance to WPIAL tourney

Haley/Ivory win section title; Butler boys soccer triumphs

The Mars doubles tandem of Amelia Haley and Emily Ivory won four matches Thursday to win the WPIAL Class AAA Section 2 championship.

Haley and Ivory downed Alyssa Sarver and Abby Nardully of Pine-Richland 6-2, 6-4 in the final.

Haley and Ivory made it to the final by overcoming a 6-4 loss in the first set against Riya Yadav and Ella Sincline of North Allegheny to beat them 6-0, 6-1 in the next two sets.

The Planets' duo will advance to the WPIAL Girls Doubles Championships, which will be held Oct. 4 at North Allegheny.

The Butler doubles team of Reagan Sommariva and Sydney Hanratty lost in the second round to Sarver and Nardully of P-R.

Boys Golf

Behind an 87 by Chad Green, Slippery Rock placed second in the Region 2 Mega Match behind first place Grove City.

Four teams — Sharon, Hickory, Wilmington and Sharpsville were disqualified and received zero points because two groups involving golfers on those four teams merged on the final hole for an eightsome. The rules committee deemed that they were disqualified due to not finishing with the group the tournament committee assigned to them.

Hampton 200, Mars 202 — At Rittswood, the Planets missed out on clinching a WPIAL playoff berth thanks to this narrow loss to the Talbots.

Shea Moffa carded a 37 and Chris Sicher a 39 for the Planets, who finish the season at 9-5 overall and 8-4 in section play.

At the WPIAL Class AAA semifinal at Hannahstown Golf Club, Butler's Brayden Setnar fired a 75 to qualify for the WPIAL Championship, scheduled Tuesday at Oakmont Country Club.

Boys Soccer

Donovan Uber scored late in the second half to give Butler a 1-0 victory over visiting Pine-Richland.

Kevin Pracht assisted the score and Austin Goepfert earned the shutout in net for the Golden Tornado (7-2-1).

Slippery Rock 7, Oil City 0 — James Gallagher and Ryan Davey each scored a pair of goals in the Rockets' rout.

Tyler Christy, Cabot Fowler and Liam Gallagher also found the net for Slippery Rock (6-2-1, 4-0-1).

Karns City 2, Punxsutawney 0 — Nate Rondinelli scored on a penalty kick in the 60th minute and Dakota King added an insurance goal.

Jake Weckerly stopped 14 shots in net for the Gremlins (11-0).

The win was KC coach Jim Grenninger's 100th career victory.

Knoch 1, Highlands 0 — Nathaniel Webb scored the lone goal in this road win for the Knights (4-7-2, 3-6-1).

Jeremiah Smith assisted on the tally.

Girls Golf

Paige Scott fired a 37 and Maggie Feczko a 41 to lead Butler to a 170-247 win over Armstrong.

Girls Volleyball

Emily Huff tallied seven kills, five aces and three blocks as Karns City downed Clarion-Limestone by scores of 25-16, 25-13 and 25-19.

Emily Wolfe had eight blocks and eight digs, Alyssa Stitt four kills, four aces and 13 assists, Mackenzie Dunn 19 digs.

Emma Clark added four kills, Kate Allen three aces and Rayna Miller nine digs.

KC also won the junior varsity game, 2-1.

Redbank Valley 3, Moniteau 0 — The Bulldogs managed a sweep by scores of 25-11, 25-10 and 25-16.

Samantha Broerman dropped three kills for the Warriors and Logan Barnhart five assists.

Union 3, Venango Catholic 0 — Dominika Logue had eight kills and five digs and Marli Hawk added 17 digs as the Damsels earned a 25-9, 25-14, 25-17 sweep.

Bryn Davis pitched in seven aces and Morgan Cumberland 20 assists for Union (8-1).

Pine-Richland 3, Butler 0 — The Golden Tornado fell by scores of 25-22, 25-22 and 25-18.

Maria Lucas had nine kills and 13 digs and Sophia Lucas seven kills and 19 digs.

Knoch 3, Blackhawk 0 — Kennedy Christy dropped 11 kills as the Knights crushed the Cougars by scores of 25-11, 25-12 and 25-8.

Ally Albert added 15 service points and Skylar Burkett 10 points and six kills for Knoch (10-0, 8-0).

A-C Valley 3, Cranberry 1 — Kylee Eaton totaled 19 kills and Olivia Boocks managed 12 in the Falcons' 25-19, 22-25, 25-12, 25-21 victory.

A-C Valley (7-1), which suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday against Clarion, also received six kills from freshman Meah Ielase in the defeat of the Berries. Emily Wetzel had 23 assists.

The Falcons also won the junior varsity match, 2-0.

Freeport 3, Neshannock 0 — In this Wednesday match, the Yellowjackets (7-1) dismantled a strong Lancer squad by scores of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-8.

Ally DeJidas had nine kills and three blocks. Mackensie Jack contributed eight kills and four aces and Lauren Lampus nine kills and three aces.
