Playing a little keep-away

Moniteau looking to possess football against Brookville

CHERRY TWP — Moniteau football coach Bob Rottman can think of one tried and true, simple way to control Brookville's potent passing game.

“Keep the ball away from them,” Rottman said.

And that will precisely be the Warriors' strategy Friday when they travel to Brookville to face the Raiders for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Brookville has used three quarterbacks this season because of injury and all three have found success.

The latest to put up big numbers is sophomore Robert Keth, who completed 27 of 39 passes for 431 yards and three touchdowns in last week's 35-28 win over Karns City.

All the way back in Week Zero, original starter Jack Krug threw for 555 yards and eight touchdowns in an epic 69-60 win over Bradford.

Rottman and the Warriors realize the unique challenge they will face this week.

“We're going to do what we can to, first of all, try to run the clock and keep their offense off the field,” Rottman said. “When they do have the ball, we're not going to give them all day to throw the football.

“I don't look for us to change personnel on defense,” Rottman added. “We're going to stay with who we have. I have faith in those guys.”

Moniteau may want to pay close attention to Brookville wide receivers Cabe Park and Bryan Dworek.

The duo have combined for 58 receptions for 887 yards and nine touchdowns.

Moniteau has been difficult to drive the field on this season, but has also coughed up some big plays.

Penalties have also been an issue for the Warriors.

“We emphasize it and preach it every week,” Rottman said. “Some of them aren't intentional — you get a hold of a facemask. It just seems to happen at bad times.”

Chance Nagy has made plays at the best times.

The senior quarterback ran 81 yards for a touchdown late to give Moniteau a 12-7 win over Bradford last week.

Nagy also hit a pair of big pass plays.

“We'll see — maybe we'll pass the ball a little bit more,” Rottman said. “We've been seeing eight guys in the box and now we have Braydon Risinger back and Issac Blum and Mason Mershimer and A.J. McElravy — young guys who are getting more comfortable with Friday night game speed. If we had to, I think we could throw the ball.”

Moniteau hopes it doesn't have to.

It has a pair of big backs in Cody Wise and Nick Martino who can churn out yards and Nagy, who is an effective runner as well.

“We seem to be moving the ball pretty good to the 30, 20, but then we shoot ourselves in the foot,” Rottman said. “We get behind the chains.”

There is a palpable excitement, though, surrounding these Warriors, who sit at 3-2.

“We're finding ways to make enough plays to win football games,” Rottman said. “Our guys are getting more and more excited every week that goes by. They're getting more hungry. It's an exciting thing to watch.”
