Motorcycle riders donate proceeds of efforts to BHS

Lynda Kerr, president of Riding for the Cure, presents a check for $35,155 to Ken DeFurio, president and CEO of Butler Health System.

A group of dedicated bikers stopped by Butler Memorial Hospital's Tower Entrance on Monday to visit their medical expert colleagues and show support.

Lynda Kerr, president of Riding for the Cure, and a team of her riders handed a check for $35,155 to Ken DeFurio, president and CEO of Butler Health System, and his team of hospital administrators. The group raises money for breast cancer research and survivors.

“This is our seventh year,” Kerr said of the fundraising event. “We had 315 motorcycles this year. We actually reached a total of over $50,000 this year.”

Kerr said this has been the best year so far for the group. She said the riders raised $50,310, with the remaining portion going to the Richard G. Laube Cancer Center in Kittanning.

“We did just one ride, but we also had bowling events,” Kerr said.

DeFurio said the partnership has produced great opportunities for research and care of patients, not only by donating money but also hair. He said he respects the group for finding a way to make a difference in their own unique way.

“It is a very special group. They ask for nothing in return,” DeFurio said. “They truly are neighbors caring for neighbors. They're work is spectacular.”

Kerr said the riders love giving support to breast cancer patients.

“We got together and decided to do this,” Kerr said. “We're all motorcyclists, and it's what we do.”
