Butler County's great daily newspaper

Scoop's rolling along

I won’t bore you with my crowing.

OK. I will. I’m 34-7 this season.

Spoiler alert: that’s a pretty darn good record this early in a season.

So, I’ll just get to it, then.

On to the picks:

Seneca Valley 38, Butler 12 — The traveling trophy hasn’t traveled much over the past decade, staying firmly entrenched in a case at Seneca Valley.

The Raiders have dominated the series since 2006 and Butler is coming in banged up and reeling.

But this is a rivalry game and sometimes weird things happen in rivalry games.

I think the Golden Tornado, who have never quit this season, find a way to keep this one close for awhile before the Raiders pull away.

Knoch 24, Ambridge 13 — The Knights got a win they desperately needed last week, gutting out a victory over Highlands.

A win here and suddenly Knoch is right back into the thick of things again.

The Knights get that victory.

Mars 30, Armstrong 15 — The Planets suffered their first blip on the radar with a loss last week to Penn Hills.

Mars gets back on the winning track.

North Catholic 33, Derry 14 — The Trojans survived a scare last week, eking out a win over Central Valley.

That’s not good news for Derry as last week’s experience could serve as a mini-wake-up call for North Catholic.

The Trojans roll.

Freeport 45, Uniontown 11 — The Yellowjackets are the best 0-3 team in the state.

By a lot.

With the most challenging stretch of its schedule out of the way, Freeport will begin its run toward the playoffs with a romp over Uniontown.

Moniteau 25, Bradford 13 — The Warriors have served notice all season that their defense is a force.

They run. They hit. They make teams earn every yard.

Moniteau’s defense will lead it to another home win.

Karns City 23, Brookville 17 — There is no way — no way — Karns City starts 1-4.

The Gremlins are really just a few plays away from being 4-0.

Brookville is not an easy out by any means, but Karns City will figure out a way to win this one.

Elk County Catholic 33, Union/A-C Valley 20 — The Falcon Knights have a way of making things interesting.

They’ll stick around against Elk County Catholic.

Grove City 28, Slippery Rock 15 — Perhaps the Game of the Week, The Eagles invade Slippery Rock for a region battle that’s also a rivalry game.

Last year, the Rockets kept it close against Grove City, eventually falling 28-0.

Slippery Rock is improved on both sides of the ball this season.

Grove City has rolled up 1,117 rushing yards already this season.

The Rockets make things interesting, but the Eagles are just too talented.

East Allegheny 33, Summit Academy 8 — Will the Knights score?

Summit Academy is still looking for its first points of the season. It has to get them here, right?

Yes. The Knights do. But it won’t be enough.

Scoop is off to his best start since bird mascots have predicted football games.
