Freeport hungry for victory Friday

FREEPORT — The opponent doesn't matter. Freeport is hungry for a win.

“We just go week to week,” Yellowjackets coach John Gaillot said. “The focus this week is on Uniontown.

“I don't care about their record. They've got some athletes. They have fast kids. We need to get win No. 1 and get on a roll.”

The 0-3 Yellowjackets travel to Uniontown for a 7 p.m. kickoff against the 0-4 Red Raiders. While Freeport has lost to three likely WPIAL playoff teams, the Red Raiders have dropped games by scores of 64-19, 42-30, 47-14 and 61-6.

Uniontown has won only three games in the past four seasons and went winless a year ago.

“We feel like we've been in three playoff games and were very competitive in two of those,” Gailliot said. “We're starting to get healthy and that's a positive, too.”

Another positive is the play of center-inside linebacker Garrett Ben.

“He's probably been our MVP,” Gaillot said. “That may sound strange to say about an offensive lineman, but he's our leader there and he's been outstanding at linebacker.

Ben leads the Yellowjackets with 21 tackles.

Running back Conor Selinger returned to the lineup last week for the first time since getting injured in the first quarter against Derry. Versatile quarterback Austin Romanchak has been banged up this year as well.

Evan McCrea has developed into a good receiving threat with Isiah Bauman for the Yellowjackets.

“Conor will be healthier this week and his presence makes a big difference for us,” Gaillot said. “Since he's been out, defenses have been loading up on Austin, keeping him bottled up.

“Conor gives us that extra threat we need in the running game and our passing game is coming along.”

Uniontown has not thrown a touchdown pass this season. The Red Raiders are led offensively by running back Ky'ron Craggette, who has 377 yards rushing with an average of 7.1 yards per carry.

“He's an elusive kid and their quarterback has speed as well,” Gaillot said. “Uniontown has had a lot of bad breaks. The ball hasn't bounced their way.”

Friday will mark the first-ever football game between the two Big East Conference opponents.

Ambridge (1-3, 0-1) at Knoch (1-3, 1-2) 7 p.m., Friday

The Bridgers snapped a 21-game regular season losing streak two weeks ago, blanking Waynesburg, 14-0. ... Ambridge has been outscored 119-6 in losses to Blackhawk, McGuffey and Belle Vernon this year. ... Knoch has won three of the four games played between the teams, including decisions of 42-0 and 48-0 the past two years.

Knoch's triple-option has produced two of the top rushers in Butler County this far in 2018. Matt Goodlin has run for 367 yards and 4 TDs, QB Chase Mullen for 303 yards and 3 TDs. Mullen has also thrown for 340 yards.

North Catholic (4-0, 2-0) at Derry (4-0, 2-0) 7 p.m., Friday

North Catholic squeaked by Central Valley, 14-13, last week in non-conference play. Derry won a Big East matchup at Mount Pleasant, 48-7.

Dating back to last season, North Catholic has allowed less than 20 points in eight straight games. ... QB Zack Rocco has completed 73 percent (46 of 63) of his pass attempts while not throwing an INT through four games.

Justin Flack (431 yards) and Onreey Stewart (392) spearhead Derry's ground game. ... Since the start of the 2016 season, Derry has a combined record of 24-3.

Bradford (2-2) at Moniteau (2-2)

7 p.m. Friday

The Warriors defense, which has been stout, has to find a way to contain Owls' running back Donny Pattison. The senior running back is coming off a three-touchdown, 143-yard performance two weeks ago in a win over Kane. Even in a 28-7 loss last week to Ridgway, Pattison gained 68 yards on just nine carries and Bradford's only touchdown.

Pattison is averaging 13 yards per carry this season.

Moniteau, meanwhile, is coming off a rousing win over rival Karns City, 20-14. Quarterback Chance Nagy scored three rushing TDs for the Warriors and also hit two big pass plays to Isaac Blum and Brayden Risinger.

ECC (2-2, 1-1)

at Union/ACV (1-3, 0-2)

7 p.m. Friday at Foxburg

Both teams played small-school crossover games last Friday. ECC crushed Port Allegany, 60-0. Union/A-C Valley dropped a 47-25 decision at Otto-Eldred.

In last week's defeat, the Falcon Knights were victimized by a pair of INT returns for scores and a kickoff return for another TD. ... Senior RB Nolan Cumberland has amassed 249 yards and five TDs on 42 carries this season.

The Crusaders ran for 332 yards in last week's win. Stephen Bobby, Hunter Cashmer and Sam Kaul each scored two TDs.

East Allegheny (2-2, 1-1) at Summit Acad. (0-4, 0-2)

12:30 p.m., Saturday

Summit Academy is still searching for its first points of the season after suffering a 41-0 setback to Burgettstown last week. The Knights have been outscored 150-0 this season.

East Allegheny is still adjusting to the graduation losses of quarterback Tamaine Underwood and wide receiver T.J. Banks. Last season Underwood passed for a school-record 2,300 yards and Banks took his talents to West Virginia University.
