I-79 overpass restrictions to stay until in effect until October

Emergency crews initially responded to an accident on Route 68 the morning of Sept. 4, after an excavator hit the overpass. Crews temporarily closed Route 68 for clean up. While they worked, the truck with the oversized load also struck the overpass, becoming wedged underneath it.

JACKSON TWP — Bids will be received this week for work to address structural issues on an overpass that was struck twice earlier this month.

Lane restrictions on the Interstate 79 overpass over Route 68 are expected to remain in effect until around the end of October as crews work to repair damaged beams on the bridge.

PennDOT will receive bids Thursday for the contract to repair the damage which was caused when both an excavator and a truck bearing an oversized load struck the overpass Sept. 4.

Lane restrictions will be in effect until the repairs are complete, and daytime lane restrictions be put into effect on Route 68 while repair work is under way.

“Work will include straightening the deflected beams on each structure, removing and replacing the damaged cross bracing between the beams on each structure and other miscellaneous work,” said PennDOT spokeswoman Deborah Casadei in an email. “The repairs are anticipated to be completed by the end of October.”

PennDOT officials won't know how much the repairs will cost until a bid is awarded, she said.
