Versatile Durand enters Knoch HOF

Longtime coach stood out in football, basketball

This is the last in a series of articles profiling the 2018 inductees into the Knoch High School Sports Hall of FameJEFFERSON TWP — Ask Todd Durand to list highlights of his athletic career and he draws a blank.But a lot of other people remember.Durand, a 1983 Knoch graduate and in his 27th year as a physical education teacher in the South Butler School District, will be inducted into the Knoch High School Sports Hall of Fame prior to Friday night's home football game with Highlands.“I never recall my accomplishments in sports very well,” Durand admitted. “When I was approached about filling out a resume' for the Hall of Fame, I remembered more of the team stuff than individual.“I guess I did well enough to get in. It's nice to be honored by your high school like that.”A three-sport athlete who earned eight varsity letters at Knoch, Durand remains involved in high school sports today He is in his 10th year as an assistant football coach at Freeport High School, where he serves as defensive coordinator.Durand has also coached girls basketball at Knoch and Burrell, was an assistant football coach at Knoch, and is an assistant track and field coach at Freeport.“I've always enjoyed being around the kids,” he said. “Coaches did a lot for me when I played and this is a way I can give something back.”While in high school, Durand served as captain of the Knoch basketball and football teams. He was a hurdler for the track team as well.Durand was a first-team All-Greater Allegheny Conference defensive back in football and played running back on offense.“I was a 175-pound fullback,” he said, laughing. “You stick your nose in there and do what you can.”During Durand's junior year, Knoch's football team reached the WPIAL championship game in 1981 with a 9-2 record. The Knights defeated Aliquippa 24-18 and Penn-Trafford 14-0 in the playoffs, but lost the title game 12-7 to Beaver.“We got down to the 10-yard line at the end of the game, but couldn't score,” Durand recalled. “That was tough to take at the time, but I look back on that year with a lot of pride.“That was Larry Kunselman's first year as coach and we were just a bunch of scrappy kids who loved football and played hard.”Durand wound up attending Slippery Rock University. He was a shooting guard in basketball at Knoch and ranks seventh on the Knights' all-time scoring list. He was recruited for basketball at SRU.“A girl I went to school with also went to SRU and told the football coach I was there and that he should check me out,” Durand said. “That's how I wound up on the football team.”He only played basketball for one year at SRU and played football for four.“I played cornerback my freshman year, then free safety as a sophomore and junior,” Durand said of his college career. “I tore my ACL in the first game of my senior year, so I came back for a fifth year and they moved me to strong safety.“My whole life has always been centered around sports. That's why I became a phys ed teacher. It's all about sports for me.”
