Shooting victim didn't know accused

More details emerged Tuesday on the shooting of a Karns City man early Sunday morning at an inn in Chicora, with police saying in court documents that the victim told troopers he did not know and had not interacted with his assailant before being shot.

Police say Gary D. Ellenberger, 56, of Chicora walked up to Heath Schrecengost, 27, in Millerstown Inn at about 1:43 a.m., and shot him in the chest from across the bar “with a sawed-off shotgun of some sort.” Ellenberger then fled the scene, police said.

When state police troopers arrived, according to court documents, Schrecengost told them that he did not know Ellenberger and had not interacted with him at all on Sunday. Schrecengost was flown to Allegheny General Hospital, where he was in critical condition Sunday, according to police.

Hospital officials had not released any information as of late Tuesday morning.

Police, in court documents, say Schrecengost's account of the shooting was confirmed by surveillance footage and witness accounts.

Ellenberger — who was found not guilty by a jury after being accused in a 2006 shooting at a Chicora bar — is facing charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, and illegal offensive weapons.

According to online court documents a preliminary hearing is set Sept. 11. Ellenberger is being held in Butler County Prison on no bond.
