Butler schools to close two-hours early Tuesday

With weather likely to hit the 90s, the Butler Area School District will be dismissing all 11 of its school two-hours early on Tuesday.

“It's really tough when it gets that hot,” Superintendent Brian White said about the decision. The early dismissal applies to all buildings within the district.

He noted that 10 out of 11 of the schools in the district don't have air conditioning throughout the building, which will leave most classrooms even hotter than the outside.

“And it's just very uncomfortable and unhealthy to have students in that environment,” he said.

The National Weather Service forecasts several days of temperatures reaching the 90s in Butler this week, which led White open to possibly making the same early dismissal decision for Wednesday and Thursday. By Friday, it appears that the weather will cool.

White said any decision to close schools two-hours early would be made by 6 p.m. the day before.

“I realize many families will need to arrange child care in the afternoon, which isn't always an easy thing to do,” White said in a news release. “I'm hoping that giving you advance notice that an early dismissal is a possibility will help.”

Any loss of classroom time wouldn't be much of a loss with the temperature this high, White reasoned.

“If you put people in a room and it's 98 degrees, not much is going on anyway,” he said.

For after school activities and athletics, students should check with their adviser or coach, according to the district new release.
