Gritty Moniteau taking on Clarion

Warrior football team coming off eye-opening road victory over Kane

CHERRY TWP — The one people who were not surprised by Moniteau's win on the road against Kane were the Warrior players.

To a man, Moniteau made the trek to McKean County with one thing on its mind.

Winning.

“These guys were confident going in,” said Moniteau coach Bob Rottman.

And it showed.

Cody Wise rumbled for 160 yards and the Warriors rolled up 306 yards on the ground in chewing up the Wolves.

The first drive set the tone — a march that consumed nearly nine minutes off the clock.

“I was really happy with what we were able to do,” Rottman said. “When you can go up to Kane and rush for 306 yards — if you can run for 306 yards on any team — that means you are dominating the line of scrimmage.”

Repeating that feat will be a challenge this week as Moniteau opens up its home schedule against Clarion.

The Bobcats are coming off a 40-6 rout of Punxsutawney in which they rolled up 447 yards of offense with their top back, Sam Minich, limited.

Minich did carry the ball five times for 133 yards and added two receptions for 44 yards.

Senior Archer Mills was 8-of-10 passing for 127 yards and a touchdown.

Clarion looks like Clarion again.

The Bobcats were 12-1 last season under longtime coach Larry Wiser, who begins his 30th season on the sideline.

Clarion won the District 9 2A title.

The Bobcats, who have won 51 games over the past five season, look as strong as ever in 2018.

“Clarion never seems to lack for talent,” Rottman said. “Or depth. I don't expect anything less but a very good team coming in here Friday.”

Moniteau hopes to show it is a legit good team, too.

Senior Chance Nagy was efficient with the football at the quarterback position, but his play on defense against Kane also stood out.

Nagy had two interceptions, returning one for a touchdown, and also recovered a fumble from his safety position.“He's the one making the defensive calls,” Rottman said. “He can close on the ball in the air.”Wise and Nick Martino also stood out at linebacker. Each recorded seven tackles.“Our linebackers attack,” Rottman said.Moniteau would prefer those linebackers be on the field as little as possible. The plan is no mystery for the Warriors.Control the clock.“That's going to be our game plan every week,” Rottman said. “We need to control the line of scrimmage and pound away at teams with (Wise and Martino). Those two guys are hard runners and are tough to handle. They have an effect on a defense and can wear them down.”
