Mars schools energy efficient

Board hears study results

ADAMS TWP — Buildings in Mars School District are as efficient as they can be, a recent study shows.

During a special board meeting Monday Dayle Ferguson, school board president, said the district recently received a free study of energy usage through the Trane Opportunity Assessment. The company analyzed the district’s energy bills and systems to see if money could be saved.

The final report indicated the district’s systems are efficient, and no shortcomings were found.

“Generally speaking, the report ... came back that we are doing a really, really good job,” Ferguson said. “Their analysis, which dug really deep, really yielded minimal savings opportunities.”

She credited the active management of systems by district officials, who constantly monitor heating and cooling in various parts of their buildings. She said the district has asked for additional information on some potential savings, but board member Christine Valenta said she believed much of the savings had to do with the time of day when the most electricity and natural gas are used.

Social media contract

The board also voted to appoint K.C. Consultants as the assistant to the director of communications for social media at a rate of $650 per month for six months.

Ferguson said with the district’s push into social media, she would like to see social media training be given to district employees and personnel.

“For those who are speaking on behalf of the district, I think it’s really important that we do that,” she said.
