HERMITAGE — Oakview's junior golf team just keeps moving on.

Five members of Oakview Golf Club's entrant in the PGA Junior League were named to their league's all-star team. And that team of 10 all-stars won their section championship Thursday in thrilling fashion at Tam O' Shanter.

The all-stars from Oakview, Tam O'Shanter and Meadville defeated the River All-Stars — from Willow Brook, Oakmont, Pittsburgh Field Club and Fox Chapel — in a 6-6 tiebreaker to claim the title.

“The score was tied after nine holes, so they went to a one-hole sudden death playoff,” said Oakview junior coach Rob McClellan, also his team's all-star coach. “Both teams sent two golfers out and both teams parred the hole.”

The PGA Junior League uses a two-person best ball format.

The next tiebreaker was a “chip-off,” in which both teams have two golfers chip a shot toward the hole. The closest to the hole wins.

“We sent Jacob Wolak from Oakview and Zach Ross from Tam O' Shanter out there,” McClellan said. “We won the chip-off rather handily. Both of our guys hit excellent shots.

“When it was over, our kids all rushed out and tackled each other. It was a mob scene, a lot of fun. There were 150 people standing around watching, so it was a cool moment for those kids.”

Parker Worsley, Anthony Trombatt, Levi McClellan and Aaron Voltz are the other Oakview junior golfers on the section champion all-star squad.

Earlier in the four-team section match, McClellan's team defeated an all-star team from Oglebay (W.Va.), St. Clair Country Club and Valleybrook 6.5-5.5. It also defeated a team from Pittsburgh 8.5-3.5.

“We fell behind in our last match 3-1 after three holes and I didn't think we could come back from that deficit,” McClellan said. “But we had the score tied 4-4 after six holes, 6-6 after nine, to force the playoff.”

McClellan's all-star unit advances to the four-team regional Sept. 15-16 at Valleybrook. The four teams — all section champions — will play a round-robin before the top teams go head-to-head to determine which gets a berth in the PGA Junior Nationals.

The nationals will be held Nov. 16-19 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The Oakview junior team is in its first season and went undefeated during the regular season.
