Slippery Rock library moving to new building

Slippery Rock Community Library is moving into a 2,240-square-foot building at 465 N. Main St.

SLIPPERY ROCK — The books are on the move.

Jan Forrest, immediate past president of the Slippery Rock Community Library, updated borough council at Tuesday night's meeting.

“(The library) in the process of being moved from one building to another,” Forrest said. “We're very excited to be able to move into the larger facility.”

Karen Pierce, library director, said the library is moving into a 2,240-square-foot building at 465 N. Main St.

“It's like eight times bigger,” Pierce said.

Pierce said a lot of work has been put into the move, and she wants to thank all those who volunteered their time.

“It's been a long time coming, but it's well worth the wait,” Pierce said.

Forrest said the move has been progressing well, but there are still some finishing touches needed.

“We're hoping to be open shortly after Labor Day,” she said.

Forrest said they also plan to start with new programs as soon as possible.

“We have several new programs that will be starting in the fall,” she said. “One of them is a ham radio operating class.”

Russell Karl, borough council president, said the move will be a big change for Slippery Rock.

“The library is actually further out of the downtown area than it was at the park,” Karl said.

Despite the distance, Karl said the library has much more potential for growth at its new location.

“They offer a lot of programs like reading programs and after-school programs,” Karl said. “They have a lot of reading resources as well as the Internet capabilities that you don't get without a library.”

Karl said he and other borough members are excited about the opening, especially after having their own hand in helping the library find its new home.

“I know we've assisted them financially and we've assisted them by waving some of the costs of opening up the place,” Karl said. “I always liked the library when I was a kid.”

Forrest said people should stay tuned for more information about the official first day, and she hopes people will visit the new building when it opens.

“We're asking people to come and see us,” Forrest said. “Come and see what we have to offer.”
