Effort to rename Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic growing

Cardinal Donald Wuerl

CRANBERRY TWP — Overnight, the push has grown to remove Cardinal Donald Wuerl's name from Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School in Cranberry Township.

As of 11:30 a.m. Thursday, the petition had accumulated more than 2,350 signatures on its way to the next goal of 2,500.

Wuerl is connected to church efforts to minimize sexual abuse allegations over the years after being named more than 100 times in the a state grand jury report on sexual abuse in Pennsylvania's Catholic organizations. He's repeatedly described in the report as dealing with accused priests by relocating them.

A 1999 graduate of North Catholic, Megan Fialkovich signed the petition. Fialkovich wrote that while nothing can be done to reverse the actions against the victims, taking the name off the school would be a way to show the actions are taken seriously and inexcusable.

The high school was named after Wuerl when it relocated from Troy Hill to Cranberry in 2014.
