Prison staff cleared to go back to work; investigation continues

Butler County Prison Warden Joe DeMore said Wednesday the correctional officers and prison nurses sent to the Butler Memorial Hospital's ER Tuesday night are all OK.

“They were released from the hospital around 10:30 last night,” DeMore said. “They're cleared to come back to work.”

DeMore said the Butler County Hazmat Team was at the jail for a couple hours Tuesday, after six people were send to Butler Memorial Hospital for exposure to an unknown substance. DeMore said the team did not find any residue of the substance that affected the correctional officers and prison nurses.

He said both the cell and the medical ward were decontaminated, but the substance still has not been identified.
