2 teens on run after escape from academy

Two boys remain on the run after they escaped Sunday evening from the Summit Academy reform school in Summit Township.

The students — a 16-year-old from Indiana, Pa., and a 17-year-old from Philadelphia — jumped out of a first-floor window about 7:30 p.m. and fled on Route 356, said state police Cpl. Tim Morando.

Troopers searched the area for two hours but they could not find the teenagers.

The boys were entered into the National Crime Information Center database as runaways.

Summit Academy spokesman Dick Roberts had no other information about the escape. But he said the school's recently implemented text alert warning system was activated.

The system sends text messages to the cell phones of residents whenever a student leaves the facility's premises without permission.

The incident was the latest escape from the facility, which is a private, residential program for boys and young men ages 14 to 19 who have committed juvenile and adult criminal offenses.

On June 18, three boys from Philadelphia, 16 and 17 years old, fled in an academy-owned, black Chevrolet Equinox. They remain at large.

A month later, three boys, ages 15 and 16, from Philadelphia, Delaware County, and the state of Delaware, broke out July 27 after one of them stole a teacher's car keys and fled in the vehicle.

They were caught after they crashed on Route 28 in Harrison Township, Allegheny County.
