Teen charged with stabbing man in fight

WORTH TWP — A 15-year-old boy is accused of stabbing a man during a weekend altercation at Cooper's Lake Campground.

The victim, a 47-year-old man, underwent surgery at a Pittsburgh hospital following the incident about 11:30 p.m. Saturday, said police Cpl. Tim Morando. His condition was not available Monday.

State police arrested the boy, from southern Maryland, who apologized for what he did, investigators said.

District Judge Kevin O'Donnell arraigned him early Sunday morning on a felony charge of aggravated assault and a misdemeanor charge of simple assault.

The boy is charged as an adult, but because of his age is being held in the Jefferson County Juvenile Detention Center in Steubenville, Ohio, on $15,000 bail.

The Butler Eagle is not identifying him due to his age.

Police said by the time troopers got to the campground, the victim, who is also from Maryland, was being taken to Allegheny General Hospital for a stab wound to the stomach.

Investigators spoke to several witnesses who helped identify the defendant, documents said. They believe the boy stabbed the man with a 3-inch knife.

Police recovered the knife, which had fresh blood on the blade.

The youth's legal guardian gave permission to police to interview him. He confessed that he stabbed the victim, according to a police affidavit, “after (the man) pushed him and punched him in the face.”

He told police that he was “sorry.”

Under state law, youths at least 15 years old are automatically charged as adults for certain crimes. But they can later have their cases “decertified” to juvenile court.

The boy's preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at the office of District Judge Bill O'Donnell in Slippery Rock.
