Charles Zangas

Charles Zangas of Fenelton was a winner of a Heroes’ Legacy Scholarship for Children of Fallen or Disabled Service Members.

He is the son of Robert Zangas and plans to attend Penn State University.

The scholarship grants are principally underwritten by the author’s after-tax proceeds from the sale of the book, “Of Thee I Sing, A Letter to my Daughters” by President Barack Obama, as well as corporate sponsorships and private donations.

The Housing Authority of the County of Butler’s 24th annual scholarship luncheon recognized and encouraged participants of the authority’s programs to pursue higher education and achieve economic independence.

The focus of the scholarship award is to provide financial assistance in areas not commonly included in the student’s financial aid package such as meals, supplies, transportation costs, day care expenses, books, lab fees, and/or summer school classes.

The Housing Authority program participants will receive 10 awards totaling $6,500. Scholarships awarded were:

Dollar Bank, $1,000 Rick Johnson

Mars National Bank, $1,000 Heather Boyle

PNC, $1,000 Samantha Weber

A-Tech, $500 Patricia Schulte

Armstrong, $500 Trevor Bodema

Hartnett Scholarship, $500 Heather Boyle

HUD, $500 Rick Johnson

NexTier, $500 Dawn Dermond

Northwest, $500 Shaquinda Kotay

Stepanian & Menchyk, $500 Crystal Kerchersky

To date, the authority has awarded over $109,500 to scholarship recipients

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OHIO — Three local students will complete internships this summer for college credit at John Carroll University.

Mary Rose Flynn, Ellysa Para and Morgan Might are part of the university’s College of Arts and Sciences.

Flynn, of Valencia, was to spend her summer with the College Year in Athens Program. More than 550 universities are part of the study abroad program in Greece. The internship is offered over two consecutive four-week sessions, running from the end of May until July.

Para of Mars is interning with the Foundation of HOPE Aftercare.

The program focuses on reintegration for former inmates and re-entrants for their respective communities.

According to the foundation’s website, HOPE Aftercare provides information resources, referrals and guidance for employment opportunities, housing, education, food assistance, mental health services and clothing.

Might of Cranberry Township, will participate in the John Carroll University summer research program.

Two local student-athletes from John Carroll University were named to the Ohio Athletic Conference All-Academic list.

Amanda Alikhani of Mars, competes in women’s swimming and diving and Brian Papich of Valencia is a guard for the men’s basketball team.

Alikhani graduated from Mars High School in 2014 and Papich graduated from Fox Chapel High School in 2014.

Student-athletes must earn a 3.5 or higher to be named an All-Academic.
