Freeport Theatre Festival re-enacts historic exploits

In “Washington in the Ohio Country” playing at the Freeport Theatre Festival, young George Washington (Nathan Love), left, is informed by Half-King (R. Courtney Riffer) that there are French soldiers in the woods. Guyasuta (Jacob Riffer), second from right, and Christopher Gist (Darrell Milstead), right, sense danger as well. The show runs through July 29.

Freeport Theatre Festival’s 29th summer season is staging “Washington in the Ohio Country,” a historical drama written by resident playwright Rennick Steele that theatricalizes the early military adventures of George Washington.

The show goes on at 7 p.m. Fridays through Sundays through July 29.

The action of Washington’s story continues outside during each performance’s intermission.

On July 28 and 29, historical re-enacting group Proctor’s Militia of Historic Hanna’s Town will join in the exploits on the hillside.

Plays take place at the Steele Farm, 2498 White Cloud Road, two miles south of Freeport off Route 356 in Allegheny Township, Westmoreland County.

General admission is $15. Those in the military, as well as those age 65 and older, pay $12. Students pay $10. Tickets may be purchased at the box office 30 minutes before curtain time.

In August, FTF will spotlight contemporary live-action heroes in “Rivertown Firemen’s Jubilee,” a dramatic musical about the lives, private and professional, of a local volunteer fire company that also happens to play in a firemen’s band.

In the play, the band has an opening for a clarinet player. Enter a female EMS worker, who also happens to play a mean clarinet.

What unfolds is the comedy and the drama of life lived on the edge of service to the community.
