BlueSox winning streak hits 6

Butler plays long ball, small ball effectively in wins over Champion City, West Virginia

Long ball or small ball, it doesn't seem to matter. The Butler BlueSox are on a roll.

Butler smashed three home runs and collected 17 hits Saturday night in a 13-3 thrashing of Champion City at Kelly Automotive Park. The BlueSox used two infield singles, a sacrifice bunt and a pair of run-scoring hits in the eighth inning Sunday to pull out a 6-3 win over West Virginia at the KAP.

“These guys have a 'whatever it takes' mentality right now,” BlueSox manager Cody Herald said.

The Sox (17-25) take a six-game winning streak into Monday night's home game against the Miners. West Virginia has dropped nine of its last 11.

Butler began play Sunday six games out of a Prospect League playoff berth with 23 games left in the regular season.

“It's doable — and our team believes that,” Herald said. “Just keep playing hard.”

Knoch graduate Dom Bucko belted two homers, added a pair of singles, three runs scored and two RBI in Saturday night's win. He entered Sunday's contest hitting .456, but went hitless in four at-bats.

Champion City forfeited the remainder of the game after seven innings because it ran out of pitchers.

Bucko did make a diving catch in center field to end the sixth inning Sunday, the BlueSox clinging to a 3-2 lead at the time.

“He's a real team player. He doesn't care about himself,” BlueSox closer and Butler graduate Wyatt Daugherty said of Bucko. “He's the best outfielder I've ever played with, that's for sure.”

Kellen Sarver homered, tripled and doubled, collecting three RBI in Saturday's win. Kristian Webb added a triple, two singles and two runs scored in the rout.

But the BlueSox had just three hits entering the bottom of the eighth inning on Sunday. Daugherty entered the game with two on and none out in the top of the inning. A bunt single by Brendan Mapes loaded the bases.

Kendrick Epling delivered a game-tying sacrifice fly for the Miners (21-20), buit Daugherty escaped further damage.

“Just come in, face the hitter and worry about nothing else around me,” Daugherty said of his mind-set as a closer. “My job is to go after guys and get them out.”

Butler set Daugherty up for the win in the bottom of the eighth. Evan Webb and Andrew Chuba opened the frame with infield singles and Steven Kokoski's sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position for Ray Scala.

“When guys are executing like that ... yeah, you want to come through,” Scala said.

And he did, lining the first pitch he saw into left field for a two-run single. Mike McGee — who produced a two-run single of his own in the BlueSox' three-run second inning — then tripled to right to hand the Sox a 6-3 lead.

Daugherty pitched a scoreless ninth to record the victory.

“Wyatt has tunnel vision when he's on the mound — it's him and the hitter,” Herald said. “And he goes after them. He's aggressive and that's all you can ask.

“Ray (Scala) was aggressive in his at-bat. So was Chuba, who swung at the first pitch. That's what we want with the game on the line.”

Anthony Rini, a former Knoch High School student whose family moved to Virginia a few years ago, started on the mound for Butler. He threw 70 pitches in 5.2 innings, allowing two runs.

Bucko has been on base in every game he's played for the BlueSox. He drew a walk Sunday.

“He's brought a lot of energy to us,” Herald said. “Dom does a lot of things well and he rubs off on other guys, and they've been doing things well.”

Monday night's game is “Bark at the Park Night” at the KAP. Fans are invited to bring their dogs to the game at no extra charge.
