Thousands expected in Zelie this week

Riders from the National Horse Lovers Association participate in last year's Horse Trading Days. This year's festival will run from Thursday through Saturday.

ZELIENOPLE — Horse Trading Days is back with classic offerings of local vendors and live entertainment.

This year’s 55th annual event will run from 8 a.m. to around 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday featuring its yearly offerings of good food, local venders and live entertainment.

“It’s kind of a fan favorite. There’s a lot (that) people look forward to,” said Matthew Edwards, event organizer. “We’ll have all our crafters and traditional food vendors and things like that.”

The event also features live music, a cornhole tournament and a children’s corner complete with inflatables and other entertainment outlets.

Attendees on Friday and Saturday can enjoy a farmers market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot at the intersection of New Castle and Main streets.

Live music is planned all three days featuring local and regional groups.

“The main stage acts are filling up, and we have different themes in those three days,” Edwards said.

Themes include local artists on Thursday, music through the years on Friday and a country music jamboree on Saturday.

Horse Trading Days began in 1963 as an opportunity for sales promotion in conjunction with a horse show put on by the Pennsylvania Amateur Horsemen’s Association. Over the years, the festival evolved, increasingly emphasizing the festivities and entertainment aspects of the event.

The show now welcomes around 40,000 people each year.
