Sarah Hepfl

BUTLER — Sarah Hepfl and Kayla Karenbauer, both of Butler, were recognized with a $1,500 scholarship from the Kit Barkus Music Scholarship Fund.

Hepfl, a recent graduate of Butler High School, will attend Duquesne University in the fall for a double major in violin performance and music education.

During high school, Hepfl was featured in the school orchestra, Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestra and other groups in Butler.

In her spare time, Hepfl gives back to the community by volunteering at her church and various retirement centers and hospitals.

Karenbauer, a fellow graduate of Butler High School, will continue her education at Slippery Rock University.

She will pursue a degree in music education in hopes for a career in music.

Karenbauer is a pianist, oboist, percussionist and vocalist. She was a drum major for the Golden Tornado Marching Band and featured as a member of the Tornado Marching Band, percussion ensemble, orchestra and women's ensemble.

A former Pennsylvania All-State Conference band member, she has performed outside of school at Gibbon's Big Band, Musician's Concert Band and Grateful, the contemporary band at her church.

BRADFORD — The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford recognized students inducted into its honor societies this spring.

Among those who were recognized were Hannah Brown of Valencia.

A radiological science major, Brown became a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, the National Honor Society for First Year Students.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Among 46 student-athletes from Tallahassee Community College, Alexander Stobert of Sarver was named to the Panhandle Conference All-Academic Team.

To be added on the list, students must maintain a minimum of 3.0 GPA.

Stobert was also named to the Florida College System Activities Association's All-Academic Team out of 29 student-athletes from TCC.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Five local students will complete externships at various locations to complete studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.Merissa Stivasson, Butler; Dominic Natali, Evans City; Brianna Dwyer, Mars; and Nathaniel Ritter and Katie Stivers of Sarver have completed their academic requirements. However, graduation will be finalized after the externship.Natali and Ritter will complete the externship at The Biltmore Estate, Ashville, N.C.; Stivason will complete her externship at French Lick Resort, French Lick, Ind.; and Stivers will complete her externship at The Historic Stonehouse, Farmington.———BEREA, Ohio — Hope Fierro and Holly Lisco, both of Cranberry Township, were among 250 students who presented academic work at the Ovation Festival 2018 at Baldwin Wallace University.Fierro's project was titled “A New Hope for the Land of the Eternal Spring: An Evaluation of Nutrition Programs at Mission Guatemala.” Lisco presented her project, titled, “National Parks.”Fierro graduated from Seneca Valley Senior High School. She is completing a major in public health. Lisco, a graduate of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Coraopolis, is majoring in national security and political science.The Ovation Festival lasts 18 days. Baldwin Wallace's annual celebration of student achievement featured research projects, scholarship, experiential learning, the arts and more.———ANNVILLE — Cole Hepler of Sarver was one of 19 men's/women's ice hockey players named to the All-Academic list by the United College Hockey Conference.Hepler is studying for his bachelor's degree in business administration at Lebanon Valley College. He graduated from Freeport Senior High School.He was also named to the Academic All-Middle Atlantic Conference for athletics and academics.
