Not armor-piercing

It seems the liberal Democrats will turn anything into an anti-NRA/anti-gun issue. Len Schoettker (“Advocate or lobby?” June 7) takes offense to anything NRA.

The ATF did not ban the so called green tip bullets because under section 18 U.S.C. 921(a) (17)(c), it does not fall into the armor piercing classification, as do numerous other bullets. The M855 bullet is a green tip but not armor piercing, as is the M855 A1 bullet which is not sold to the public.

Law enforcement officers generally wear body armor of Class II, which will stop up to a .45 caliber handgun round or class III which will stop up to a .44 magnum. Class IV will stop up to a .30-06 round but it weighs 10 pounds and is 3/4-inch thick. Class II or Class III will not stop most center-fire rifle bullets. That is the reason the NRA and most sportsman organizations opposed the ATF ban.

In short, it would have opened the door to the total ban on all center-fire bullets, which is what the Democrats were hoping for.

Remington does not make any green tip bullets. It makes sporting and target ammo — unless you call the polymer tipped hunting ammo “armor piercing.” The Federal Cartridge Corp. is a major supplier of ammo for the government including the green tip bullet.

The NRA has pushed for armed security and metal detectors in schools since 2012 and also have security advisers that will assist schools to strengthen their security. Let’s not forget the police training and the Eddie Eagle Program that teaches kids not to handle guns. What have the Democrats or anti-gun people done to help reduce gun deaths beside trying to ban guns and ammo?

If we are going to dismantle the Constitution, we can start with the First Amendment, after all, do we really need the freedom of speech and religion?

There are about 41,000 suicides in the U.S. compared with about 16,000 homicides, and our politicians continue to ignore the mental health issue.

Pray for whoever you likes, but I am going to pray for all the people whose lives are destroyed every day, both by suicide and violence. I am also going to continue supporting the NRA and any other organization that protect the Constitution and the United States.
