Options On The Rise

Butler point guard Ethan Morton (25), entering his junior year in the fall, has been offered scholarships by 19 Division I basketball programs so far.

BUTLER TWP — This will not be a typical summer for Butler High School basketball player Ethan Morton.

The Golden Tornado's incoming junior point guard received a full-scholarship offer from Marquette on Monday, then was offered by Oregon two days later.

“As of last Friday, their (college coaches) contact became unlimited for a while,” Morton said. “I'm not sure how long that period is, but they can send emails, text messages, whatever.”

Not that it bothers the 6-foot-5 Morton. He's gotten used to it.

Besides Oregon and Marquette, he's received Division I offers from Pitt, Duquesne and West Virginia, Big Ten schools Penn State, Ohio State, Indiana, Purdue, Northwestern, Wisconsion and Iowa, along with Virginia, Alabama-Birmingham, Stanford, Butler, Vanderbilt, Miami of Ohio and Cleveland State.

That's 19 schools and counting.

“I'm a long way from filtering through all of that,” Morton said. “I'm enjoying it rather than getting overwhelmed by it.

“Some days I don't feel like talking, but you can be that way about anything. I know this is a life's blessing ... A lot of guys would love to be in this type of position. There's no way I can turn that into a negative.”

Mars graduate Robby Carmody went through a similar process in his high school basketball career before committing to Notre Dame prior to his senior season.

Morton is not putting himself on any sort of timetable in terms of making his final decision.

“Everybody is different that way,” he said. “I'd love to know where I'm going before my senior year begins, but I have to see how everything plays out.

“It will be a huge decision for a lot of reasons.”

Morton recently returned home from Colorado Springs, where he was trying out for the 17-year-old USA national team. That final 12-player squad will be playing in a tournament in Argentina.

Morton was one of 30 high school players invited to the USA Basketball Camp. He is not one of the 18 invited back for the final roster evaluation and cut-down.

“There were 14 kids a grade above me, 14 kids in my grade and two kids a grade below me,” Morton saiod of the players attending the camp. “I would love to have been selected, but I treasure that experience.

“I got to work with and play against guys who will probably spend a few years in the NBA. I learned so much when I was there.”

Morton is coming off a sophomore season in which he led Butler to an 18-4 record as the Tornado's lone returning starter. He averaged 24 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and three steals per game.

With two varsity seasons remaining, Morton has 930 career points. Shawn Bellis holds the Butler record of 1,466.

“These camps and other experiences, they're all part of the process,” Morton said. “I'm just enjoying it. It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing.”
