The Butler School Board will consider instituting a substance abuse policy for the 2018-19 school year that would require random drug testing for students in extracurricular activities.
Superintendent Brian White said the board asked him to obtain copies of similar policies in place in the Seneca Valley and Mars school districts and told him they want a policy.
Board members discussed the policy at Monday's board meeting.
“They want it in place for next school year,” White said.
The district does not have a substance abuse policy now.
A draft policy, which is posted on the district website and can be seen here would receive a first reading at the June 18 board meeting, he said.
“Students participating in student activities, athletes, student drivers would be subject to randomized drug testing,” White said.
