Adams Township 5K on tap Saturday

When Haley Geyer accepted the title of Parks and Recreation Director of Adams Township in southern Butler County, she took on the responsibilities of coordinating the more than 10-year-old Adams Township Community Day.

That included directing the festival’s 5K run and walk. Although not a runner herself, she is dedicated to serving the community, supporting local firefighters and providing a quality experience for runners and walkers.

This Saturday at 9 a.m. marks the second annual running of Fueled by Fire 5K Race and Walk which kicks off a day of fun in Adams Township. The event benefits two local fire departments, Adams Area Fire District and Callery Volunteer Fire Company and may be familiar to many since it was previously named the Herb Kaufman Memorial 5k in honor of the dedicated firefighter of 43 years.

Fueled by Fire 5K starts in Adams Township Community Park. Haley Geyer describes the out-and-back course as mostly flat with a slight grade at the beginning and end. Although the event offers competitive awards, it’s welcoming to runners and walkers of all abilities, including kids in strollers and dogs.

Geyer hopes to surpass last year’s participation of 65 runners and to continue to grow. Competitive awards include top three overall male and female finishers and first three in age groups from 12 and under through 60-plus in 10-year increments. Last year’s first male finisher was Michael Baumgadel with a time of 19:09 with Ashley Gage winning the women’s race with a 21:23 finish.

All participants receive drawstring bags, t-shirts, water bottles, cool towels and more from race sponsor Mars Bank. Following the run, there will be plenty of post-race refreshments donated by local businesses.

Everyone is encouraged to stay for the festivities of Adams Township Community Day beginning at 1 p.m. with entertainment by School of Rock Wexford, Sing Sing Sing, Mars Stars Jump Rope and others, kids activities including bounce house and inflatable slides, climbing wall, petting zoo, magician show, pony rides and more. There will also be a variety of food trucks on hand throughout the festival which wraps up with fireworks at 9:30 P.M.

Registration for Fueled by Fire 5K Race and Walk opens in Adams Community Park on Saturday at 8 A.M. There is plenty of parking at the main parking lot or several other lots in the park. For more information, call Haley Geyer, 724-625-2221, ext. 239 or to register online, visit https://secure.getmeregistered.com/get_information.php?event_id=129254.

For the full schedule of Community Day events, visit www.adamstwp.org. You’ll also find details of other summer park events open to the public including three Movie Nights with family films on a giant inflatable screen and three monthly Painting in the Park sessions.

Condolences. We mourn the passing and celebrate the life of longtime Butler runner Walter “Buddy” Turner III who died on May 23. Although Buddy wasn’t the fastest on foot, he was the best at encouraging others and keeping running fun and will be missed by many.
