SCRANTON — Commonwealth School of Medicine medical student Jeanne Sullivan of Saxonburg won the Lackawanna County Medical Society Alliance’s Excellence in Women’s Health Field Award.

The award goes to a student who has demonstrated a passion for women’s health through research, quality improvement projects or community service.

DAYTON, OHIO — Evans City resident Sarah Richard earned the Dedication and Commitment Award from the University of Dayton that goes to a student who displays exceptional dedication and commitment to their values; and engages the minds and hearts of others, challenging and supporting them to actively reflect on their own values.

Shirlann Harmon, a senior at Seneca Valley Senior High School, has been named one of a select number of semifinalists in the 2018 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.

Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 54th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — Brian Papich of Valencia received the Carroll University’s Boler School of Business David M. Benacci Award for Promising Investment Managers

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Youngstown State University students were recognized two Butler County residents for scholarship, leadership and other achievements recently at YSU’s annual Student Awards Banquet.

AnnMarie Lowerre of Butler, a sophomore theater musical theater track major, received the Gina Tenney Scholarship Recipient presented to a sophomore enrolled in the College of Creative Arts & Communication.

Hannah Telesz of Renfrew, a senior media track major, received the Bernadine Marinelli Memorial Scholarship presented to an outstanding student supervisor in the Division of Student Experience.

NATRONA HEIGHTS — St. Joseph High School students, including Butler County residents, won awards at the recent Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

Andrew VanFossen, Sean LeMay, Diesel Losch and Spencer Brackett of Butler and Robert Lipnichan III of Bruin all won sponsor awards. In addition Lipnichan won a Certificate of Merit for Excellence in Creativity.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — Rachel Osheka of Cranberry Township won the J. Joseph Whelean Leadership in Service Award at John Carroll University for the 2017-18 academic year.

BEREA, Ohio — Hope Fierro of Cranberry Township was nominated by faculty and staff to take part in Baldwin Wallace University’s 124th Annual White Rose Ceremony. Fierro, a graduate of Seneca Valley Sr. High School majoring in public health, was asked to participate in recognition of her special contribution to life at Baldwin Wallace.

The White Rose Ceremony is staged each May on commencement day in memory of Philura Gould Baldwin, granddaughter of founder John Baldwin and the university’s first librarian. At the behest of the Baldwin family, an oration is given and select female graduates carry white roses that serve as a memorial to Philura. Each woman must have, in her own unique way, distinguished herself by making a difference in the university community.

INDIANA, Pa. — Caleb King, son of Steve and Petula King of East Brady, is a recipient of the Ida Z. Arms Scholarship for Mathematics from Indiana University of Pa. King, a 2015 graduate of Karns City Area High School, is the student member of the IUP Council of Trustees, a member of the IUP Ambassadors student-alumni association and participated in Alternative Spring Break.

The scholarship is given to a full-time student who demonstrates overall academic achievement. Arms taught at IUP from 1959 to 1987 and was active with both the local and national Kappa Mu Epsilon mathematics honors society.

MARS — Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV has partnered with Friends of Gale Cox to present the Gale Cox Memorial Service Learning Award to MIU IV’s 5th- and 6th-grade autistic support classroom at Mars Area Centennial School, Mars Area School District, to benefit the Butler County Humane Society

The award, started in 2015, is a $400 grant given to a MIU IV classroom to be used to support a service learning project in the community.

Gale Cox began her work for MIU IV in 1990, continuing for 19 years,.

Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV is an educational service agency that provides programs and services to 27 school districts in Butler, Lawrence, and Mercer counties.
