140 and counting

Butler junior Eliza Drohan, left, broke the Golden Tornado's girls lacrosse career goal-scoring record this season. She has netted 140 goals and still has a season to play.

BUTLER TWP — Her consistent knack for scoring has lifted Eliza Drohan to an impressive milestone, with one year remaining to keep raising the bar.

Butler's junior broke the school's girls lacrosse career scoring record this season. She found the net 56 times this spring and has 140 scores in her varsity career.

“It was always in the back of my head, whether or not I could break it,” said Drohan, a midfielder. “I didn't think it would happen this year, if at all.

“It's an exciting accomplishment, not just for me, but the whole team. I couldn't score without my teammates. I love being out there with them and I love the thrill playing lacrosse gives me.”

Drohan tallied 33 goals as a freshman, then jumped to 51 in 2017. Annie Tigano, who had previously coached the Golden Tornado for eight seasons, returned this season to lead the program once again. She learned she could count on Drohan for more than just goals.

“Eliza has a great attitude,” Tigano said. “She is very motivated, works hard and is willing to help her teammates. That's why she is one of our three captains, along with Chloe Wertz and Karolyn Miller.”

One of Drohan's strengths is her ability to change the pace of her team's attack.

“She has a hard shot and knows when to use it, but she also knows when she needs to place it,” Tigano said. “She's not flashy, just an all-around good lacrosse player who can shoot from anywhere.”

Drohan admits that being counted on to score so many goals adds pressure.

“Sometimes, it's difficult,” she said. “If I miss a shot, I can get frustrated because I don't want to let my teammates down. But they never get upset with me.”

Drohan began playing competitive lacrosse on a boys team in the fifth grade. That experience helped her, not only from a physical standpoint, but also mentally.

“Playing with boys is a lot different from playing with other girls,” she said, “but it taught me to play tough and not let other players determine what I can do on the field.”

Butler struggled this season, finishing with a record of 5-12. It was an improvement, however, over a one-win campaign in 2017.

“This was a big transition year for us,” Drohan said. “We changed coaches and had some players new to varsity.

“With me getting the scoring record, hopefully, it can set a new standard of what we're capable of. We will have a big class of seniors next year and I know we'll be capable of beating some teams.”
