Officials with the Saxonburg VFW have identified a World War II memorial that was recently found on the side of a road in the borough.

SAXONBURG — Officials with the Saxonburg VFW have identified a World War II memorial plaque that was recently found on the side of a road in the borough.

Gordon Mainhart, commander of Saxonburg VFW Post 7376, said the plaque, which bears the names of several local World War II veterans, was turned in to the VFW after it was found.

On Thursday, Mainhart said due to publicity from local media, a family member of one of the men honored on the plaque contacted the group and identified her uncle, Norman R. George.

Mainhart said the family member reported that the plaque had been displayed in the Clinton Township Elementary School before that building was demolished.

He said the plaque then disappeared for several years, before turning up on the roadside.

“They were searching for this for years,” he said. “We still are looking for information.”

Mainhart said the family member informed the group that the plaque will be donated to the VFW for display, along with original pictures of those named, all of whom are from Clinton Township.
