Memorial Day observances around the county

Marine Corps League Detachment 743 starts off the annual Butler Memorial Day Parade in Butler on Monday May 29, 2017.

In preparation for Monday's Memorial Day Parade, city police have set up temporary no parking areas on Main Street, starting today, May 25.

The Butler Memorial Day parade is scheduled to begin at 10:40 a.m. on Monday, May 28 at Diamond Park.

Police say the majority of main street will be closed for the parade

Memorial Day observances around the county include:

The city's Memorial Day parade will begin at 10:40 a.m. Monday at Diamond Park and march north on Main Street.Following the parade, an event at North Cemetery will feature remarks by Butler County Veteran of the Year Roy Remone.

Butler TownshipAt 9 a.m. Monday, there will be Memorial Day observances at VA Butler Healthcare's New Castle Road campus. The featured speaker is the system's interim director, Alan Petrazzi.

Cranberry VFW Post 879 will hold its annual Memorial Day ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday at the veterans memorial in North Boundary Park.

The Chicora Memorial Day parade will begin at 10 a.m. Monday. Participants will line up at 8 a.m. on Kittanning Street. The parade will travel to Main Street and up West Slippery Rock Street.

Evans CityThe Evans City Bishop Sharrar American Legion Post 219 will host a Memorial Day service at 2 p.m. Sunday at Evans City Cemetery.The ceremony is hosted by the legion and Rotary of Evans City, and is being held in honor of borough resident Dean McMillen, a legion and club member who died earlier this year.In case of rain, the ceremony will be held at Evans City Elementary School.

The Memorial Day parade in Freeport will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the old junior high school followed by a service at Riverside Park.

American Legion Post 852 will sponsor a flyover at noon Monday along Route 8, immediately followed by a Memorial Day ceremony at the legion post at 227 W. Prairie St.A parade will begin at 1 p.m. at Harrisville fire hall and proceed along Route 58 and Route 8 before ending at Community Park.

An observance will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mars VFW Post 7505, 331 Mars-Valencia Road. Local veterans will speak.Penn TownshipAt 1 p.m. Sunday, there will be Memorial Day observances at the Wings of Peace memorial. The event will run until about 4 p.m.

The Memorial Day parade will be from 10 a.m. to noon Monday and will proceed along West Main Street to North Rebecca Street, before ending in Roebling Park.

American Legion Post 393 is sponsoring a ceremony at Slippery Rock Cemetery at 10 a.m. Monday, with keynote speaker and Slippery Rock Mayor Jondavid Longo. Also speaking will be David Magliocca and Katelyn Book, winners of the annual Outstanding Eighth Grade Boy and Girl contest.A picnic at Slippery Rock Community Park will be held following the event.

The Sower's Chapel, 100 Iron Bridge Road, will hold a community Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. Sunday in its outdoor sanctuary. The service will honor all those who have served in the Armed Forces and special honoree Dale E. Shultz who was killed in action in Vietnam in 1970.

American Legion Post 474 will host Memorial Day activities Monday. They include ceremonies at Zelienople Cemetery at 9 a.m., Harmony Square at 9:30 a.m., followed by a ceremony at Harmony Cemetery.At 11 a.m. a service honotoring veterans will be held at Memorial Park on Main Street. That event will include a flyover by the Condor Aero Club from Zelienople Airport, guest speakers and music by the Seneca Valley Marching Band under the direction of Robert Matchett.
