Stormy weather no match for dog park shelter

Two children visit the Rotary Dog Park in Cranberry's community park Wednesday to spend some quality time with their dog. The park recently got a storm shelter from the Cranberry Area Canine Partners.

CRANBERRY TWP — Humans and dogs alike will have some shelter from the storm after upgrades made to the Rotary Dog Park this spring.

A pavilion was installed at the large dog area of the Rotary Dog Park in Cranberry's Community Park. It was donated by a homeowners' association in the township that no longer had use for it.

The shelter came to the park in part through efforts by the Cranberry Area Canine Partners, a group that was formed last year to make improvements to the park and better serve dog owners in the area.

Nancy Hans, president of Cranberry Area Canine Partners, said the group continues to meet monthly to discuss ideas and possible projects.

“We continue to encourage people to come to our meetings and share with us what they'd like to see at the dog park and what overall canine experience they want in Cranberry Township,” she said.

Dog park upgrades began last fall with new lights in the parking lot and signage. There was also concrete poured at the entrance of the two large dog park areas for better drainage.

An Eagle Scout approached the group about building two agility obstacles for the large dog park, one for each area. The obstacles will have an A-frame like design but instead of a point at the top, it will have a square pause table, Hans said. There will also be a tunnel underneath for dogs to run through.Pete Geis, township parks and recreation director, said the small dog park area will get some attention in the fall. The group also has been instrumental in bringing a series of dog obedience courses to the township through the parks and recreation department. The inaugural six-week winter-spring sessions wrapped up in April. Hans, who ran the classes, said there were about six people and dogs in each class.“The feedback we got from individuals was very good,” she said. The next session of obedience classes begin June 25 and run for six weeks.
