An eventful 5-day Puerto Rico excursion

My daughter and I arrived in Rincon, Puerto Rico with a Lonely Planet guidebook, running shoes and plenty of sunscreen.

Rincon is best known as a world-class surf destination. It also holds an Ironman-length triathlon annually.

Day 1: We quickly realized that the narrow winding backroads were dangerous for cars and potentially deadly for pedestrians. Fortunately, Puerto Rico is an off-road running playground.

Lottie and I headed for the beach and what would become one of our favorite runs. It’s possible to complete almost five miles from the canal on the southern end of Rincon to Puerto Higuero lighthouse, also known as El Faro, perched on cliffs north of town.

The route passes through Tres Palmas Marine Reserve and Steps Beach, a renowned snorkeling location, as well as hurricane-damaged walls and roofs wrapped in FEMA plastic.

I ran barefoot for the last half mile, then tossed my shoes on the beach for a cool-down dip in the blue-green Caribbean. Later in the week, we would view a new sea turtle nest at this spot.

Day 2: A half-hour’s drive south brought us to Cabo Rojo and the longest continuous beach on the island. We stopped in town and overcame the language barrier to talk with a lifelong resident who volunteers at a small art museum. We shared a common bond in baseball since he had watched Roberto Clemente play winter ball in his hometown.

Porzo explained almost apologetically that the city still showed signs of Hurricane Maria. Beyond the obvious structural damages, the town looked almost deserted. More than 135,000 people have relocated to the United States mainland in the seven months following the devastating storm.

Our run began a few miles south at Corozo Salt Flats, where salt has been gathered since AD 700. A one-mile gravel bike trail leaves from Las Salinas Interpretive Center and winds through the salt flats to a pristine beach.

The trail continues another two miles north to a harbor with a mountain bike rental shop, but we opted for a barefoot walk on the beach instead.

Farther south, we parked within sight of Los Morillos Lighthouse, the southernmost point in Puerto Rico and hiked the sandy trail to the lighthouse grounds. The trail continues, dipping into a tidal wash, then climbing to a windswept cliff.

We jogged the dusty single-track, slowing as the route snaked along the cliff’s edge. We were surprised by dozens of green iguanas of up to three feet in length sunning themselves on rocks or hunting in the brush and enjoyed the breeze above the salt flats.

Day 3: We headed southeast along the coast to the 10,000 acre Guanica Dry Forest and more than 50 kilometers of trails. We hiked more than ran the rolling dusty road with ocean on one side and desert on the other. Guanica is home to more than 700 plant varieties, some of them quite rare, and nine of the 14 endemic bird species, including the Puerto Rican emerald hummingbird which circled a melon cactus blossom about 20 feet from the trail.

Day 4: We got an early start on our run at Domes Rincon Mountain Trail, four miles of hilly singletrack through the forest near El Faro and an abandoned nuclear facility nearby. We looped through the forest several times, then took a steep downhill toward the sea, finishing with a run along the old Spanish seawall for a total of six miles.

After the morning run, we had plenty of time to visit to a coffee hacienda in the inland mountains. We sipped cups of strong Puerto Rican coffee on the veranda while the owner told of surviving 200 mile per hour winds of Hurricane Maria.

He serves a neighbor’s coffee processed on the premises until his plants begin to produce again, probably next year.

Day 5: After a visit to the world’s largest radio telescope in Areceiba, we planned to run through Bosque Estatal de Guanjataca, a 2,430 acre park in the karst region. We found the ranger station closed and most of the 27 miles of trails impassable from storm damage, but we eventually made our way to the entrance of Cueva del Viento. The cave was cool and wet and full of amazing stalactite growth and creepy tailless whip-scorpions. It was time to go home.
