Moniteau budget advanced, deficit and tax increase included

Moniteau School Board members clashed at Monday's meeting on the budget proposal for next year which contains a deficit and a tax increase.

WEST SUNBURY — Moniteau School Board members clashed at Monday's meeting on the budget proposal for next year which contains a deficit and a tax increase.

The board tied at a 4-4 vote that would have advanced the proposal for its final voting next month, according to John D'Amore, the district's business manager.

After another discussion about a proposal that features a 3.01 mill property tax increase and a deficit of more than $300,000, the board voted 6-2 to move forward with the budget.

“We're working on reducing this,” D'Amore said. “We've got some things in the works that's going to bring that down.”

In a May 14 meeting D'Amore said during a budget review that there was still time to lower the deficit, but the state will not allow them to increase it after the proposal phase. He said overestimating is smart in these situations, especially with so many late additions to the budget.

Mike Panza and Cecil Blauser voted against the proposal on the second vote.
