The Bomb Squad was called as for a suspicious package that resulted in the evacuation of a township building on March 21, 2018. The package was found to be a rent check from a disgruntled tenant.

EVANS CITY — A Texas man will be heading to county court after waiving charges related to a suspicious package which caused the evacuation of a business building, before his scheduled preliminary hearing Tuesday.

Peter J. Bamford, 37, of Victoria, Texas, faces formal arraignment July 3 in Butler County Court on charges of felony sending a facsimile weapon of mass destruction and misdemeanor obstructing the administration of law or other government function. Another felony charge, terroristic threats, was withdrawn.

Assistant District Attorney Russell Karl said his office is recommending Bamford be placed into the county Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program, where the charges can be dismissed and later expunged, but those details will be worked out when the case enters county court.

Bamford allegedly sent the suspicious package that contained a handwritten note in all capital letters that read: “Final Payment (expletive)! Check Enclosed” to A.R. Building Co. at One Adams Place on Seven Fields Boulevard, Adams Township, which was received March 21. The package was wrapped in glitter and tape.

The mailing, he claimed, was a way to convey his displeasure over exit fees tied to an apartment he recently rented while living in Tennessee. A.R. Building owns that apartment complex.
